City water in fresh water tank
This has happened 2 or 3 times in my friends 1 year old Forest River trailer that he bought new 1 year ago. Hooked up to city water and his fresh water tank will start taking on water. The first time it happened the trailer was only about a month old and Forest River replaced the water pump. Now it has happened twice since then. So is there anything else that might cause city water to get into thee fresh water tank? Or does he have another bad pump? It doesn't happen all the time, just 2 or 3 times in the past year but we are wondering what would cause it

I believe the water pump has a check valve that, if broken, will allow the city water to fill the fresh water tank.

Thank You for that information. That's what we thought but it has happened twice in a year with 2 new pumps. Guess it is possible to have 2 bad pumps. He is going on an 8 week vacation pulling the trailer from Calif to New Jersey and many stops on the way. He is going to buy an extra pump just in case he has to change it along the way.

You could install an in-line check valve so you don't have to rely on the one in the pump. However, it seems strange that he's had 2 bad ones and I've never had one go bad. I don't think they fail all that often.

Glad to see that someone noticed the same issue and that I'm not crazy. I filled my fresh water tank to 1/3 when we left on our last trip. Just in case we needed it for pit stops along the way - which we did. Hooked up to campsite water supply and when I got home and went to put the trailer away I noticed the fresh water tank was full. Thinking on the drive home I did remember that the trailer pulled "differently". I've been puzzled as to how this could be the case based on all I've read here about how the systems work. It didn't happen on the trip we just returned from so maybe I had a stuck valve???

When you fill the tank do you pour water into a water port or do you connect to city water and flip a valve? You could have a leaking water fill valve.

Also a factor is that the level readings can change considerably depending on the levelness of the trailer. This makes it difficult to compare readings, unless the trailer is level for each reading.

Check valve at the pump. Had this problem with our Tiffin Motorhome. Too much pressure and you'd fill the whole tank overnight. Less pressure and it wasn't as bad. Either way, check valve wasn't doing its job. Can either install a new check valve or install a stop valve on the discharge side of the pump (and remember to open when needed).

Is he using a pressure regulator on the city water line? He maybe in an area of high pressure which will cause the anti back flow valve to fail..

I know we've always used an adjustable regulator. Ours was failing around 50 psi, which it shouldn't.

For now I'm going to blame my one time event on not using my pressure regulator. It was our first time use for the trailer and the hose/filter/regulator setup. It kept dripping quite a bit at the hose connection for the pressure regulator. The camp water pressure seemed fine to me (which is dumb I know since I don't have a pressure gauge built into my hand or eyes) so I took it off and simply connected directly to the camp water supply. Maybe overnight it spiked? Who knows. Will put some teflon tape on my pressure reg and make sure it stays inline from now on, even if it drips.

A friend had that happen, and it was the water "mix valves" where you change the settings from normal, to city, to country, etc. Valve was replaced under warranty, end of problem.
When he set the valve to "city fixtures", it dribbled water into the fresh water tank without him knowing, 'till the tank overflowed.
