Why is my thread closed? Who decides that it has no more usefulness and how is it done?

The thread in question was becoming argumentative in nature and was closed by a moderator. If you have any questions in the future please PM a moderator.

You started a thread where you listed all the troubles you are having with your trailer. Lots of good folks attempted to help you and you pretty much shot everyone down. I sympathize with your issues but that thread ran its course. And starting another thread simply to bash Jayco and/or your dealer serves no purpose. We're Jayco owners just like you and have no stake in the company. And it sounds like Jayco was willing to step up to the plate, but not your dealer. That's where your beef is.

If you are having that much trouble with your dealer than you might want to be discussing this with your attorney and not on an online forum. Most owners here are pretty happy with our units.

It is unfortunate the hassle you are having with your new trailer and I sympathize. The forum is a good place to get ideas on how to rectify a problem but, after reading your now locked thread, it appears that you are primarily ranting to us about the problem. I hope you can get the problem resolved to your satisfaction.

IMO: I don't think usefulness is the key issue. I believe the key issue is group cohesion.

What I mean by that is the group is formed primarily of current, past, and prospective Jayco customers. These customers enjoy their units, enjoy them in different ways, and also suffer the challenges of keeping any rv, Jayco or otherwise, in good operating condition.

These are entertainment products that provide a way of enjoying ones time off. Most members would probably say they enjoy being forum members and part of the group, and yes, find the forum "useful" and critical.

A specialty forum can provide access to specific knowledge not otherwise available. This is needed due to the complexity of the units. Most manufacturers are considered to be converters. They take a variety of products and combine them to form an RV to meet their vision...which often makes it difficult to figure out how to get things fixed.

If the need for help didn't exist, the group would likely exist as more a general group. There are, in fact, general RV groups out there that can find themselves naturally forming specialty sub-groups. You could reasonably expect that the tt and 5ers and class A and class C Jayco members are likely to group up informally as well for their respective needs.

Many RV owners have found that having repair and maintenance expertise themselves helps to get them back on the road rather than sitting at a dealership awaiting parts and service.

Anyway, part of group cohesion is helping each other and allows some degree of open discussion to accomplish that. Somebody(s) have to manage the group and make a decision/judgment as to the limits of an open discussion to keep the group viable and focused. So, keeping the group together is IMO the first thing that is first, and the usefulness of information flows from that.

A new person to this forum just stated "I'm sure I will be on this forum a lot picking everyones brains for advice or help." That really, to me, is the goal that brings everyone together.

Maybe I'm a Pollyanna, but group cohesion with positive vibes and contributions make the forum a valuable tool; when a thread 'degrades' - it becomes a detriment that turns both new and old members away from it. That's not to say there won't continue to be issues and disagreements, but when that occurs - try to voice it in a positive and constructive manner (no sniping) and definitely don't take it personally or strive to have the last word.

Abiding by the forum rules [especially #11] and practicing good forum etiquette go a long way in making this one of the better forums out there. For us, it has been one of our primary sources of RVing information so keep sharing good info out there!!

Right, degradation of a thread can spiral into some members abandoning the forum. The rules help to keep members within social bounds, but at some point a judgment call must be made as not everything is clear as to when things have gone out of bounds.

For example, if you physically met in a group and a verbal shouting matches or physical fights constantly broke out, few would want to continue meeting fellow members. Those lines are different for everyone.

Personally, I have a very higher than average tolerance for verbal arguments, so I'm not the best person for managing a forum group and I have to constantly revise my comments to keep things in bounds for others less tolerant than myself.

I agree with all that you posters have stated.

As you go thru life you have to figure out how to disagree without being disagreeable. This applies to successful online activity also.

I PM'd him my experience and have not heard back. Being a full-timer, we are not likely to be near our selling dealer when we have waranty issues, as we have now. We have had some, shall we say, negative dealer experiences. Jayco is very interested in hearing about these and they will fill out a complaint over the phone that gets reported up the line. Unfortunately they cannot do anything about it yet. However, they have approved a mobile tech to come to me if I need it, which I think is great customer service. We have not used it yet because we now have a couple of things that will need a dealer's attention (a screw came up through the vinyl floor and we have the front cap fading problem), but Jayco corporate has been nothing but helpful. I too hope he gets his issues handled.
