Converted taillights and marker lights over to LED

I have now converted the taillights and side marker clearance lights over to LED on our new White Hawk 24RKS for $ 59.29 plus shipping. The taillights change over was a piece of cake, the kit came from Jayco's OEM supplier Command and amounted to $ 42 plus shipping. The LED bulbs for the side marker + clearance I got from Amazon for $ 17.29 CDN for a pack of 20 LED bulbs. It turned out very well, the trailer is now easily being seen at night on the highway. How to do it, please read up on this on our travel blog:

Did you by any chance check with your local INSPECTION STATION to see if those LED lights are DOT approved type... Any and all trailer SAFETY LIGHTS here in the US all fall under the jurisdiction of the DOT. I'm pretty sure Canada has a similar inspection requirement.

The worse that can happen you may not pass your next safety inspection if the LED LIGHTS and LENS assemblies do not pass DOT requirements. There is usually a DOT ID number stamped into the LENS of the assemblies that tells the inspectors the light assemblies are DOT approved types.

Just saying...

Roy, you got me going, but this is a good question! I went quickly out to the White Hawk to check the new taillight lenses. Yep, they have a DOT number. Command Electronic Ltd. is a major OEM supplier to RV Manufacturers. Regards, Benno

You have to have your RV inspected where you live?

Thinking the same thing. No inspections here in Ontario, Canada, and our trailer plates are for life, so they can't withhold on renewal.

LED Taillights

I replaced the tail lights on an older RV I owned prior to purchasing my 2016 Jayco with the LED version. I was a little surprised to find out it (Jayco) used the older incandescent bulbs, not LED. You can get either from Commend electronics, I guess the incandescent are cheaper, although the LED are really much better. I'll wait till they go out then replace with the led modules. last time I checked was around 30$ for the pair on amazon.

This is true in Alberta as well, but you can be sent for directed inspection by a Peace Officer who believes the equipment is non-compliant and a safety hazard. Immobilization of the vehicle or trailer is an option in the interim. Of course, this would likely be overkill for led lights on a trailer.

Here in VT we have to have all trailers inspected annually by a registered state inspection garage. An inspection sticker similar to the one that goes in your windshield is placed near the front of the trailer. Mine was placed on the drivers side of the A-frame.

Thank you to the OP for posting the tail light conversion kit info and pics! I will be looking into this for sure. Another item for the Christmas list [emoji4]

We are lucky here in Ontario Canada, only commercial trailers need an inspection yearly or every 2 years as I know. I bet you yanks must pay for your inspection or is it free? :-)

Nothing's free [emoji20].... I think it was around $35 if I remember correctly.
