converter keeps blowing

I have a 2010 22ft jay flight that blew the converter both times we used a geneator. The dealer replaced it both times under warrenty. They also said the newer converters are sensitive to generators. I don t know of anyone who' s had this problem. Can anyone help us?

I would have your generator checked for the "quality" of its electrical output. In particular, I would check AC frequency and the shape of the AC waveform. These are the most likely to have caused you trouble, although voltage level needs to be checked also. Some generators vary alot from load to no-load.

I agree with David472, if this is only happening when you use the genny, then you must be getting some type of surge from it. What type of generator are you using, and are you using any kind of surge protection?

I would recomend using an inverter type generator, they have a much cleaner output.

THanks- The generator is a champion 3500 that we used on our 2005 trailer with no problems.

I don't have an answer to the converter-generator issue..., but Jayco did change from the IOTA converter/charger to the Progressive Dynamics brand for the 2010/2011 model year.

You may want to check all grounding on both the generator and the inverter. If you have an open ground on one or the other it may be causing the problem. Or possibly no common ground between them if they are in different parts of the TT. I think I would try to run a common ground wire between the two and see if that may help.

I say that since you said you didn't have any problem with your previous trailer.
RV dealers? I would be surprised if they had any terrific electronic knowledge.
