Dead TT Battery

Can I leave the battery on my TT hooked up and charge it with a regular battery charger?

Welcome to the forum.

Short answer is, Yes. BUT, can't you just plug in your TT to an outlet (with an adapter) and let the TT converter/charger keep the TT battery charged?

Not really sure about the adapter and plug in, I am very new to this stuff! Can you elaborate on what I would need to do that?

If you plug the trailer wiring into an outlet (weather it be a 30 amp plug or a small 15-20 amp one with an adapter) it will charge your battery (as well as power the entire camper).

It could be helpful if you provide more info on your TT (year, size, make).

Most TT have a circuit breaker panel for 120v circuits combined with a fuse panel for 12v circuits. This panel also incorporates a converter/charger to provide 12v power to the devices that need 12v (refrigerator, water heater, and some other stuff) and provide power to charge the TT battery.

Most TT have a 30amp plug and some have a 50amp plug for power when camping in campgrounds that have outlets. There are adapters to allow those 30amp (or 50amp) plugs to plug into the usual house outlets (15 or 20 amp). The house outlets can supply enough power to charge the TT battery, for interior lights and a few other things, but not enough for the microwave or the air conditioner. W*mart, Amazon, and other places have these adapters.

I hope this has helped a bit.

Just to add to the detail that Oldman provided - If you plug the camper in the battery charger built in to the converter he mentioned, is a smart charger. It will charge and maintain your TT battery without the need for an external charger. It's basically a "Smart Charger" and knows when to drop and increase the charge rate to keep your battery topped off.

Yours is a very similar unit to mine and when I looked it up it says it is a 30 AMP rig. If that is true here is the adapter you would need to hook it up to a standard 110 electrical outlet. Hooked up to the 110 do not expect it to run your A/C, Microwave, or Television, but it will keep your battery charged and run the CO2 and smoke detector all the time.

I also thank you for this information as I did not know that plugging into my garage wall will also charge my battery! I always plug-in a day or two before I leave on a trip to get my refrigerator cold, pull out slide, etc. & start packing. Now I know I don't have to take-out my battery and charge separately as I have been doing that!
Thank You

You do have to be a little careful with these. I am not sure where this one stands for quality, but usually a cheaper version is in the starter bucket of stuff the dealer gives you. Mine is a cheap one it is a small black plug that was only a couple inches long. You do not want to pull to much power through them, or they will get warm, and possibly melt. I keep my HTT plugged in 100% of the time it is at home. I run the lights, frig, and internal charger. It has never been an issue. I once in a while will turn on the AC for a short time, but never for any extended periods. You also want to use a good heavy duty extension cord.

Good luck

I have not tried it yet, but the dealer told me if I pull the green 30 amp fuse that is line outside the trailer behind the battery box that I don't need to disconnect the battery. Can anyone verify that? Thanks

That is true it won't drain but it won't be charging either so if left a long time may need a charge before using it again.

Thanks JHerzog for the confirmation! I used to have to disconnect on my old unit when going to storage... Fuse will be easier as long as I dont lose it! By the way does anyone know if that is a standard 30 amp or a sloblow? Thank you!
