Diesel Tahoe for 2021

i recently saw that GM will be selling their Tahoes/Yukons with the 3.0L Duramax Diesel with 10 speed transmission. As a daily drive it gets up to 33MPG. With a trailer it is over 20MPG. There is 277HP and 460lbs torque. Max towing is 8,000lbs, which is more than I have now on my 24RKS at 5,500lbs.
What do people think of using a Tahoe to pull a less than 7,000lb trailer? Any concerns? I would use it as a daily driver for the MPG and about three weeks per year pulling the trailer.

My towing experience with the short wheel base wasn't great. We were towing a 29' trailer that weighed in at 8000 to 8200 lbs loaded, the max limit of a 2009 Yukon. I had a Reese Dual cam hitch, trailer was level. No matter what I did the tail was wagging the dog. I did alot of research at the time and came to the conclusion that the wheelbase is too short to make a good towing vehicle. I don't remember the formula, but I did come across a formula for wheelbase to trailer length ratio. I also believe the suspension is too soft. Maybe the Suburban or the Yukon XL would be OK.

What’s the max payload of the Tahoe? What’s the loaded tongue weight of your camper?

My concern would be the available payload. I've been really disappointed in the available payload in GM's full size SUVs.

The heavier diesel engine is likely to exacerbate that problem.

All that being said, our 2018 Tahoe lists 1588 lbs available payload on the sticker. That's not too bad I guess. If you're towing a smaller trailer you'll probably be fine if you don't fill up the truck with gear. I've always thought of it from the perspective of towing our old TT which was 33' long GVWR over 9,000 lbs with a tongue weight somewhere up over 1000 lbs. With that weight and the short wheel base of the Tahoe, that wouldn't be a good match.

The short wheel base might be a bit of an issue towing a long trailer up near the max weights, but shouldn't be much of a problem for smaller trailer.

I haven't towed anything major with this Tahoe yet, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so within the stated limits. Eventually I hope to tow a boat with it, but that's a different animal.

The standard Tahoe wheelbase is 116". Suburban is 130. Comparable Fords are a bit longer. For comparison, an F250 supercab, an actual TV IMHO, is 148".

Live in Rockies and Need More Power

We often drive up from 4,500 feet elevation to 10,000 feet. In less than 10 miles. It can be steep. I need more power. The 460lb ft of trorque sounds fantastic.
I want to keep the trailer at 7,000 or less as I like to keep things under 80% carrying capacity. That includes total trailer weight as well as tongue weight. With the V6 3.0l, I wonder if it will be lighter than the 5.3l I have now.
I upgraded from a Yukon to a Suburban for better stability provided by the longer wheelbase. It made a big difference and I had forgotten. The 2021 Tahoe is a longer vehicle but may not be quite what I would feel comfortable with.
I like having both a people mover and a truck. I keep a utility trailer in the yard for use as an open truck and like to keep everything dry in the winter and secure in the summer inside the Suburban.
There is not a load of HP in the 3.0l diesel. Is 277 hp enough if I am keeping my speeds under 65?
I sure like the 33mpg in the suburban in the new diesel. Would make a better vehicle in the 99% of my driving without the trailer.

Until a couple of years ago we lived at 9000', so we climbed a lot returning home. When towing our 10k pound TT up one five Mile steep grade north from Canyon City on a warm summer day using a lower gear and going light on the accelerator kept the transmission temperature no higher than a safe 200 degrees.

Here are the specs for my beloved '02 Powerstroke dually.
Automatic Transmission - 250 HP at 2,600 RPM.
2002 7.3 Powerstroke Torque Spec
Automatic Transmission - 505 lb-ft at 1,600 RPMs.

Sure, this is a different vehicle but you asked about HP. I think you'd have plenty, and the diesel won't be bothered by the higher altitude. But torque is important for towing and it looks like, with your lighter weight you'd be fine. On paper anyways.

I have a Yukon XL with the 6.2 gasser. I'd like to test drive one with the little diesel.
