Door holder latch problem

We recently purchased a used 19RD. The entry door holder is designed to hold the door at a 90 degree angle so the awning has clearance to open. The leverage strain on the holder that is mounted just a few inches from the hinge side pulled it loose from the door. I'd like to mount a new holder to keep it just 6 inches from the side but can't figure out how to find something to screw into behind the tin. Help!

I think it's like mine a 2010 model and I used a nut and bolt to fix the problem. I'll take a picture of it in the AM and hope it helps you too. On the top part of the gas shock I went with 2 larger screws and the part that's attached to the door is where I used the bolts and nuts. Three years now and no problems.

After checking the gas shock connections I see that there's "3" screws into the trailer side( and just a little larger ( diameter) than the original ones). The 3 bolts I used for the door attachment are 3/16"X 2" sst. As I mentioned above after I changed all the fasteners 3 years ago it never came apart or caused me any problems, nothing came loose after that.

The inside and it does not interfere with the screen door. I just drilled out the exiting holes for the 3/16" bolts.

We have had to replace the shock on our 2008 after it lost its "shock" capabilities and this was the correct part;

Questions for you

Was this shock original to your unit or a mod you added? My holder/latch is on the bottom of the door, inches from the door hinge. There is a angle bent wire mounted on the unit that clips the door at 90 degrees. The door side is what has come loose. I'm going over to take a picture that might help.

From the picture it looks like your unit is glass? Mine is tin and if I did this shock, how can I be sure to hit wood behind the tin on the unit?

The 90* door holder was broken on my TT when I looked at it on the dealer's lot. They replaced it before I took delivery and it failed again this year.

My door is an aluminum skin over styrene filler. I used 'Nutserts' (blind rivet that have a threaded hole) to secure the pulled off part.

Since any wind will decimate these parts, I gave up using it. I now use 2 different lengths of bungee cords between the door and the catch for holding the storage door open:
- Shorter cord for when the awing is stowed and the door opens fully
- Longer cord to hold the door against the opened awning arm.

Let me know how the gas strut thing works out.

Don't know if this would hold any interest for ya but I was having problems with wind closing the door as well as almost breaking it during high winds. I tried several solutions (as you can see in the pic) but the one that works for me was the installation of two flag pole holders and a piece of PVC pipe. My only mistake was mounting it too high cuz I have to remove the pipe in order to extend or retract the awning. I should have mounted it lower. In any event, it works.

Thanks Trout. Looks very sturdy. I would try that if I could locate the 2x2 stud under my siding. I'm going to go over and try my stud finder.

Don't know why my attachment rotated. I can assure you all my 19RD is not sitting atop on a rocket!
