Draining water heater question (Atwood)

I have a 2010 Jay Feather 22y. I am trying to drain the water heater on my unit and I am having trouble determining the correct size of socket to use. The drain plug is made of a plastic material. I have tried SAE and metric sockets. Each socket I try is either slightly to large or slightly to small. I am beginning to think it takes a special tool. I even found a video online that explained how to winterize your RV. It stated that Atwood water heaters should take a 7/8 in. socket. That size proved to be slightly to small. It is amazing that given the large amount of paper (owners manuals etc.) about each appliance I got when I purchased the unit non of it seems to be of any value in answering even simple questions. I am hoping someone has figured the answer to this and can help me out. Thanks

As I remember the water heaters owners manual said the plug should be hand tightened only. I was able to loosen mine by hand and have always done same when tightening. Did you try using your hand to get it out? If it's too tight to get out by hand I'd call dealer or Jayco and ask them.

Can't you just open the low point drain and open a faucet to break the vacuum? There should be a one way valve AFTER the water heater, but I don't think there is one before...

Take it out once, drill and thread a valve into it and never need to fight to get it out again...

Be sure and remove the original every so often to was out any debris that can't get out that small drain.

I plumbed my drain with a small hose and a valve on the end so I can put the hose outside of the hot water heater and keep the mess outside of the hot water heater.

Yep 15/16" should do it. Due to the placement of the drain, I found it a pain to drain the tank, I also replaced the oem plug and added 12" piece of braced faucet hose with a valve on the end. Now it is easy to drain, but it does take a little longer to accomplish.

water heater plug

I've always replaced the plastic plug with a brass one from the hardware store. The plastic plugs eventually strip on me.
