Driving speed?

Ordered a Whitehawk and will see it in a month or so. I am wondering how fast most of you drive when pulling your trailer? When I had a motorhome I stayed between 60 and 65.

So what speed and how long do drive in a day?

Thanks

Steve

Don't really want to do more than 500 miles in a day, and I have slowed my speeds to 60-65. I used to drive our truck and trailer at 65-70, but most of the time that was on very familiar roads and little to no traffic. Now with the motorhome, it's a much heavier rig and less nimble than the pickup.

Steve, your instincts are correct. The limiting speed factor on Jayco travel trailers is the tire speed limit.

From Jayco manuals for Jayco Jayflight and White Hawk:
This recreational vehicle is equipped with special trailer (ST) tires that have a maximum speed rating of 65 MPH (104 km/h). You should not exceed this speed rating. Exceeding the tire speed rating may result in tire failure, which could lead to a crash causing serious injury or death.

Under-inflation will increase internal tire temperatures and lead to early tire failure. Check tire air pressure before every trip. My 23RB losses 15 psi over 6 weeks in storage.

65 unless we have to get around somebody, then try to stay under 70ish until we can get back over in the right lane and slow back down to 65.

I set the cruise control to 64 and still get passed by pretty much everyone in America, but I don't let that get to me. We made a game out of it, my daughter counts the number of vehicles, and license plate states that pass us before we get to our destination.

70mph is the sweet spot for me and my truck it will stay in overdrive that way. My rig handles good at all speeds I do not have any of the white knukle handling issues you here about all the time. I also have Lt tires on my trailer which eliminates the china bomb 65mph crap.

I haven't had mines out that often but when I do tow my rig I try to keep it between 60-65 mph, mine tires are rated at 75 mpg but 60-65 is comfortable for me. I have gone up to 70 mph but I quickly brought it back down to 60-65 mph.

68-70 for me as well. For the same reason 2500hd mentioned. That keeps it in OD. 65 would be my preferred max, but it just hangs out in 5th unless I speed up those few mph.

How long a day? Depends on where and what the weather is..700 miles can be a breeze
400 impossible if someone snafus or the following cities involved
Chicago
New York
Boston (if someone does something dumb everyone stops to watch)
Charlotte NC
Atlanta.
Montreal . Gods own eternal construction zone
Orlando ( god help me never again)
If someone messes up between Sault Ste Marie and Red Rock ON... There is only one highway. They close you wait. No choice.
Washington DC at anytime. ( Havent been to DC in quite a few years.)

60 mph max.

Took me less than 2.5 days to bring the trailer from Indiana to California (2200 miles).

Straight, relatively flat roads I will run 70 to 72 all day long. TV loves cruise control there and never kicks out of 6th gear. Of course, when I start to encounter hills or curves I let my body tell me what is comfortable. It's like a guy told me once when trying to teach me to drive a bulldozer. Sit up nice and straight, don't lean and your body will tell you what to do.

My 2015 Jayflight has L rated tires, which is 75 mph speed rating. Furthermore, many trailer tires are rated for full weight at the max speed, but have documentation that you can overinflate by X psi to gain Y speed rating, which lowers your payload to Z rating.

Knowledge is power.

All that being said, I try to stay around 68 mph. That keeps me out of the far right lane on the interstate (not having to deal with slowing or speeding up merge traffic) and my fuel mileage is reasonable. Much above 68 or 69 and I notice a larger drop off in fuel economy.

We have a 4 year old and 2 year old, so we try not to travel much more than 300 to 350 miles per day. More than that has exponential effect on over tired toddlers, which has an exponential effect on daddy's patience.

Last time I was there on business, I had an extra day and thought I would drive down to Virginia beach to eat some crab cakes and be a tourist. I spent the entire day in the car.

I drive 65. I'd do 60 but it downshifts way more often at that speed. Sometimes to clear traffic I'll actually make it up to 70, but never for long. Heading out tomorrow... going through the DFW Metroplex... and that's never fun with a TT in tow...

I don't eat seafood (I understand its abhorrent to grow up in the Chesapeake tributary and not eat seafood...), but its my understanding that the BEST crabcakes in the world are from G&M in Baltimore. That could save you significant time next time you are in our little corner of the swamp. Better yet, they are available online too...
