I have a 08 GMC sierra 1/2 ton SLT with tow package ,with a 30ft 304bs Jayco.....I can tell I need a electric brake with the added weight...(not used to it ,lol),...what is the difference between the "plug and play" and the ones you have to hook-up?...is it worth it , and WTH does it plug into ? lol
It sounds like you need a brake controller. The trailer should already have brakes.
Prodigy makes a good one. I would not recommend a "time based controller". Many vehicles have a harness under the dash that the controller can be connected to with the proper adapter. I would be surprised if your truck doesn't have the harness. This is the easiest way to install the controller. Otherwise you have to find the proper wires under the dash and tap into them. I wouldn't tow without the controller. In most, if not all, states you must have brakes on a trailer that heavy. I am sure there are discussions on the forum about controllers. A search should find them.

cool, thanks guys!,..just didn't know if I should try to do it myself or the "plug-n-play"...( I know a lil.., I wired blue- LED lights under both footwells and dome lights and tapped in to the dome light where it fades in-n-out ...so hopefully its not worse than that ! lol,..btw trailer DOES have brakes...
I did my brake controller installation myself and it's not that difficult as long as you know the steps. I highly recommend etrailer.com. They have hundreds of videos showing installations for most vehicles. They even tell you all the stuff they used so you won't get to installing it and find out you didn't get a wire or fuse or something and have to run out to the store in the middle of doing it.
