Electric Tongue Jack

I am going to get an electric jack for my trailer. I have looked and Barker and Atwood seem to be good brands, are there any others to avoid? I found a used Atwood 2500lb one for sale, just wondering if it will be enough? Current crank hitch is 2000lb. Tongue weight is about 900lbs I do need to get my trailer weighed to confirm. I think dry specs are around 700lbs. I was thinking around 3500lb. Camping world has a couple models one that has good reviews is the Odessey.

Hi Derek ,
I have a husky brand that I'm happy with. Most trailer places in the lower mainland sell them. I haven't read of anybody having trouble with jacks no matter which brand they have. When I bought my trailer I made sure it included one. A great investment. I don't think it's essential to weigh your trailer for this if you know tongue weight. The tolerances aren't so close that you should have a problem picking one.

I have an Ultra Fab from Ebay that is great. It is also a 3500 so if needed I can lift part of the TV when putting the weight distrubution on. If it is not needed for the trailer I always thought 'the heavier the better' and it would have to work less and maybe last longer.

I prefer buying new simply for the warranty. My Barker 3500 statred acting up and Barker sent me a new motor to install. Too bad I had a problem with a new item but I am glad it did not cost me additional funds to repair it.

I have the Barker and love it. Do you have spring bars? If so, I would get a larger jack - it makes putting those on sooooo much easier.

Do it, you won`t regret it for a minute! It makes easy work of not only trailer leveling but even more so engaging or disengaging the spring bars on the weight distributing hitch. The reason a larger jack is desireable is so you can lift your TV and the trailer with ease for that purpose.

To the OP, My personal recommendation would be the Barker 3500 for your trailer. Built in Michigan, by a company that gets good CS reviews. BUT I have never owned any of the other jacks, so I have no way of knowing how good they are.............

Be sure you get one big enough to partly lift the rear of your truck. It makes the spring bars a snap to hook up.

Had to use the crank last time I was out when I had a problem - I have to say it worked pretty well.

I 've also had to use my crank because my TT battery died plus blown fuse. I used crank and it went easy.

Get the biggest tongue jack you can afford... you are lifting more than the 900 pounds of hitch you are also lifting some of the vehicle... (unless your a glutton for punishment when you attache the weight bars).

Ditto for the Barker 3500.

I bought the VIP 3500 24" a year ago b/c I was tired of hand cranking to position the weight distribution bars in the Texas heat.

Actually had a failure last week camping 500 miles from home due to blown in-line 30A fuse, but the emergency hand crank worked easily for set-up and next day trip to auto store fixed the fuse problem.

Go big so that you can remove and transfer to any size TT purchase in your future. (P.S. save your original dolly hand crank so that you can swap-out at that time.)

Best modification we every made!

Had a "Venture" brand jack first - because it was cheap. Love the concept and made hitching and leveling much faster and easier. The cheapie self distructed after a year or so -- the gear at the top broke off from the vertical shaft and the jack dropped down to the street when we hit a bump. Luckily, it did not do any damage to the trailer, and luckily we were on our way home about two blocks from the house. Now have a Barker 3500 which is much much nicer and heavier duty ...

Which one? The 18" or 24"?
Was looking at adding the Fastway Jack Foot.

I got the 18" although I sometimes use a couple of pieces of 4x6 under the foot. It works really well. I paid $199 for it from eBay with free shipping. Here's the link if you're interested.

Does anybody have any idea of the jack hole size in my sig. trailer. I am looking at a Bulldog 4000lb 2 1/4" shaft jack. I just need to know if it will fit.

I think the bolt pattern and hole size is universal.
