Electric Tongue Jack
We keep our trailer at a storage facility so I do not leave the 12v battery with it when storing it. I bring it home and keep it on charger to have it ready for trips. My slide out works with the 7 round connector plugged into truck and I also thought the power jack did too. The other day I found out differently. It appears that I must have the battery hooked up for it to work. I checked the inline fuse and it was good, the only wire from jack goes to the battery. Does this sound like the way most electric jacks are wired? I will be checking with the dealer, but thought I'd ask here.

That's how mine is, one wire to the battery. There should be a manual crank option if needed too.

The jack is grounded to the A frame so a second wire is not needed... if you are having corrosion problems you can run a negative wire from the frame mounting bolt to the - of the battery...

The tongue jacks actually run off the battery, not from the tow vehicle. I have been using utility trailers for years with electric jacks.

Thanks everyone for their answers. You just confirmed what the dealer told me. It sounded like it will work if the battery is low or dead if the 7 round plug is connected to the truck.

Well my guess is the jack would pull more power than your 7 pin would want to provide - especially under load. You do have the option of using the manual crank with the jack if needed when you do not have a battery.

you might also consider placing a zip lock baggie over it if you store it for extended periods of time.

We use a small plastic garbage can. It's the size of one you would use in a bathroom.

I have powered the jack from the 7 pin when the battery has been too low to operate the unit. The trailer was at the dealer's lot for some repair. They did not disconnect the battery when they finished. By the time I picked up the trailer the battery was discharged. Plugging in the 7 pin allowed me to use the power jack.

My electric tongue jack is not wired to the battery, it came with a 7pin connector wired to jack. I plug it into TV for power, then unplug it and connect 7pin trailer wires to TV for traveling.

That is an interesting way to do it. Wonder why they did not wire it to your battery?
I would be interested in taking a voltage measurement at the jack when it is operating from the 7 pin. I have a 30 amp (or is it 40?) supply to AUX, but I am suspect on the voltage loss at higher amperages.

I've never seen one wired like yours. I would not like that configuration. I sometimes raise or lower the jack after set-up to get the AC condensation to run off where I want it to.
Could you post a picture of the set-up?

The TT came with a manual jack. I bought this one from Northern Tool. I mounted a 7pin TV end connector on trailer frame wired to the battery so I can plug into it now or the TV. It works faster from TV at 14.7 volts than it does from TT battery at 12.5. The Jack 7pin could have been cut and hard wired but I like the plug ok. I can just leave it plugged in now to the connector I put on TT and if I have a dead battery I can plug it into the TV.

My power jack is wired to my 7 pin, I can run it without the battery hook up.
