Electric water heater fault lights.
Hi.
I recently purchased a 2008 (purchased in 2009)Jayco Jayflight G2 29ft travel trailer. My problem is with the fault switch on the wall. When i select "Electric Water"switch,it works some times but very frequently faults out with small red light.Like i said,it works sometimes but not all the time.I have seen it working before i go to bed and be faulted out in the morning.
The Jayco dealer here in my area says it is common for it to fail.I don't accept this because it costs over $250 to replace and they tell me it is not warranted if i put in myself. They want to charge $100 to warranty it.Has anyone had the same problem?I am sure this unit is used on more than just my 2008.
Hope someone can remedy a cure.Thanks.

Hi c1pinse,
What part of the water heater are they going to replace for $250.00?

We had a similar problem and they changed the switch. It works fine now.

When you say they changed the switch,do you mean inside on the wall(the one with electric/propane holding tanks etc)?

That is odd that the small light comes on with electric - that is the gas side lockout lamp. When I was having a problem with my gas side, the electric side would still work fine.
Couple of options - do you have a multimeter? If so, there are two tests you can do --
1. Remove all power to the trailer (ac/battery) - pop off the switch panel and check the switching using continuity mode on the meter. That should tell you if they are working properly. Kind of doubt that is the problem because I dont think even a faulty switch should lock it out - just make it not work - but I could be wrong.
2. If you look at my signature, there is a link to a library of manuals. Under Atwood, there is the service manual. It goes into how to run a basic diagnostic on the board using a multimeter.
If you end up believing it is the circuit board - you can find them online all day long for $125 and install it yourself. I am not aware of any reason Atwood would not warrant a new board if you installed it yourself.
Let us know what you find.

Thanks Terry. Will be going to the trailer today.Hope fully i can solve this.It is strange that it works some times, but not all the time.
Spoke to a Jayco tech today and he tells me that it should not come on because it is only intended for the gas.
Does the wall panel pop off if you pull on it?Newbe

That is the one they changed. Ours now works like it should on electric.

It does just pop right off. There is a small tab on the control panel and it snaps right out.

He every body. With regards to my post.Went down to the trailer this week and removed the tube assymbly for the propane. There were 2 wires attached to it with a nut on screw.Turns out the nut was cross threaded and thus no ground.Repaired and put back together.Viola, everything working fine. These 2 wires were hidden behind the tube, directly below the plug for the hot water tank.Even spoke to dealer and was told this would cause both propane and electric hot water to malfunction.Happy today but sad as well.Park closes this Thanksgiving day and our camping season is over for another year. Will surely miss it.Come on spring.
Happy Thanksgiving all.
