Unhappy Electrical Issue 27RLS

Good Evening,
I went to hook up my battery in my trailer today and accidentally put the white negative wire to the positive side of the battery. It was only for a second but it blew out both 40 amp fuses in the fuse panel. I replaced those fuses and checked all the other ones and they are ok. I also checked the continuity of the fuse in the inverter and it was ok. I still have no power to anything other than my power jack and light in the front. Any advise, suggestions, something I am missing?? I would assume that blowing the fuses should have kept the inverter from getting damaged?? Or am I wrong to assume that??
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance!

Did you check the inline fuse by the battery to see if it was blown?

That's what those 40a fuses are for...in case the battery gets reversed.
Sounds like your disconnect switch is off.

If the disconnect switch was off then the fuses wouldn't blow would they?

Mine has an in line resettable circuit breaker in the battery hot wire just a couple feet from the battery. I've seen some that had a fuse at that location. Also, there are usually 2 fuses on the converter that should be checked. I don't know about the fuse on your inverter.

There is a 30 Amp fuse right by the battery, it was ok and I have no idea if this unit has a resettable circuit breaker in the line. What would it look like?? I would have no idea where the disconnect switch is either as this is a new unit and I have not owned an rv before. Thank you for your help!

Some, most?, with the Progessive Dynamic converter are wired to charge while the disconnect is off.
Whether it would blow the reverse polarity fuses with the disconnect off is unknown by me, but it seems plausible because if the disconnect was off you could still hook the battery up backwards and send a reverse polarity back direct to the converter
Thought I'd through it out there.
Sure sounds like it though if the electric jack is still working.

Oh
If it was all working before then through my disconnect theory out the door.

I'm sort of surprised that a Jayfeather doesn't have a disconnect

Will a regular automotive fuse work to replace those 40 Amp fuses?? Or do I need a reverse polarity fuse??

They are normal fuses.

My converter has some fuses in the DC fuse panel that all blow when the battery is reversed.

Don't ask how I know.

Norty1 is right, although I have yet to blow the revers polarity fuses.. but there were a few others that went to the fuse grave yard.

Check ALL your fuses with a digital meter. There are a lot of members that spent hours troubleshooting electrical problems because the fuse looked ok. The fuse panel should show (labeled) the 2 reverse polarity fuses. Also the MAIN fuse located by the battery may have blown also. Again, use a meter to check them and you may save a lot of time and frustration.

One additional suggestion, get a piece of red tape and put it on the lug end of the positive battery cable so it does not happen again.

Don

There were 4 in my converter that were blown. I purchased indicator fuses in the same rating to replace them. They glow when they are blown.

I keep hearing about the reverse polarity fuses. I had 2 X 40 Amp fuses blow and I replaced them with automotive type fuses. Will automotive type fuses work and are these what you are referring too? Or am I missing something? I checked the other fuses with a multimeter and also changed the 30 amp fuse by the battery as a precaution. I agree with labeling the cables for sure, I have never owned a trailer and should have obviously been much more careful!!

Looking at the WFCO converter specs. (If your converter is a WFCO, looks like it in pictures at Jayco site)
The fuses are a fast blow fuse.
I wouldn't be concerned right now about it, just don't reverse the battery again until you put in the correct fuses.
Robot Check
Snip.....
NOTE: If the reverse battery protection fuses are blown during installation, be sure that the battery has been connected properly, then
®
replace the fuses with ATC “Littelfuse ” Type 257 with the same
rating as the original.

Mod note: There were 2 separate threads on this same problem. They are now combined into one to prevent duplication.

It would help to specify the power converter;
WFO would have the reverse fuse on the 12 volt side of the electrical panel.

Progressive Dynamics on the power converter itself. You have to remove the Electric panel in order to get to the power converter. (all have 40 amp-some have 1 fuse; some 2; some 3 depends on the capacity of the converter)

ALJO, I will be looking at it more closely this morning and will post which one it is once I get a closer look. I ran out of daylight quickly yesterday so I called it so there were no more problems. Thanks!!

Good point ALJO. Mine is a PD but that could be his problem. Need to read up on the converter manual.

His is a WFCO. It has 2 40's
My PD has 4 25's
Other PD's have 2 30's or 3 25's.

Plus you can see it is a WFCO in Jayco's 360 view.
