Ems?

When I had motorhomes they usually had an Energy Management System (EMS). That system would monitor what power was available to the motorhome (ie: 50amp or 30amp) plus supply voltage and then monitor current usage of the motorhome. In the event the current usage exceeded the available supplied power the EMS would progressively shed loads to prevent main breaker trips on the power pole.

In other words it might disable the microwave, then the washer/dryer, then the water heater, then the refer and usually the air conditioner last. The sequence of load shedding was selectable by the user but once set up the system was fully automated. It also used some timing logic to prevent load shed for temporary demand spikes.

Now that we've gotten out of motorhomes and into TTs I notice folks talking about EMS and wonder if they are talking about the same thing? It looks like what most TT folks call an EMS is really a surge protector. Am I correct or do I need to do some more research? Thanks.

You are correct, in the fifth wheel and travel trailer world they are refering to surge protectors. There are primarily two companies that provide most of them .
Progressive Industries and TRC . They monitor voltage and surges and protect you from variations within their parameters. They don't control individual appliances but rather shut off the power to protect the whole rig.

Here is a video on Progressive 30a system.

Welcome to the forum

There are several fairly recent threads on EMS.

Generally agreed Progressive Industries is the way to go. Life time warrantee and great customer service. I have called them concerning mine and had an immediate and informed response.

I agree with Night, I've owned 2 Progressive Industries EMS units, a 30 and 50a version. Can't say it's saved my bacon but I'd not be without one.

X2 RedHorse1. I have a spare one still in the box to use if the one I'm using ever has to go back to the factor for service. I will not plug in to shore power anywhere without one even at my home base. I had a failing utility transformer at my home base two years ago that send 132+ volts to my site as well as my s&b neighbors. My EMS shut me down with no damage. My neighbors never even knew there was a problem, but one of them mentioned he had several light bulbs burn out.

I have a 30a portable PI EMS as well. I've had people ask me what it is. When I explain what it is and what it does, they all tend to respond the same way.

"Hmmm...I'll have to look into one of those!"

I know I've sold a couple of these already! LOL. Where's my bird dog PI?

I have the Progressive Industries 30amp hard wired unit. I cannot tell you how many times the unit shutdown the incoming power to my TT. Most of the shutdowns were due to low voltage conditions.I just purchased my Eagle brand new and before the first trip I installed the EMS.

I was on a two week RV trip a couple of weeks ago in Tennessee with temps in the mid to high 90s. Both campgrounds we were in had low voltage problems from all of the A/C units running. I was in Nashville KOA in a new section, with all brand new pedestals and experienced one low voltage shutdown. The second week I was in Plantation RV Resort and experienced a low voltage shutdown.

I'm on my 7th RV (6 motorhomes and a TT), been RV'ing for 14 years, full timed for 8 of those and probably stayed in several hundred different RV parks in 49 states. I've only had a low voltage issue one time in all that travel and that only caused a minor issue when the A/C started up. I'll probably continue along without the surge guard but thanks for all the input.

I only asked because of the term EMS which apparently has a different meaning in the TT world than it does in the motorhome world.
