I was thinking that $80 was a bit steep for a secondary surge protector, but this one for $42 looks like it would fit the bill for me:

http://www.amazon.com/Camco-55310-De.../dp/B00JGJH8QU

It even has a higher Joule rating than the SSP30 (1050 Joules vs 825 Joules). I do not remember seeing the Camco product back when I was looking for options.

I should buy a lottery ticket. My house has been hit by lightning. I lost all my computer equipment that was hard wired to the network. At that time, the network cabling entering the house was not on a surge. It is now.

Luckily I did not loose anything else.

I had a lightning strike on a big pine tree right beside my house a few years ago. The strike traveled down the tree to the roots and then outward to my house and under the slab right under my computer room. I had everything in that room hooked to a APC UPS system/surge protector. Items that didn't survive:

APC UPS system
Printer power supply
Ceiling fan in another room on the other side of the house

All of my computer equipment survived fine except the above noted power supply. The computer was turned on at the time.

Your suggestion looks like a nice product for a 30A application. Thanks for pointing that out.

Edatlanta, thanks for sharing your story. Looks like the APC UPS supply had surge protection and was sacrificed during the lightning strike. A good example of the situation we are talking about here.
