Exterior screw stripped

Happy Labor Day weekend everybody!

I recently noticed one of the screws which mounts the rear rain gutter has stripped. I am unsure the best way to remedy this problem. Shall I use a drywall anchor?

I drilled a new hole and plugged the old one with Byutal tape. You could go with a slightly larger and longerscrew that grabs solid material. Whatever option you use put caulking on the screw to prevent water infiltration...

Take screw out.

Fill hole with toothpicks.

Put a dab of caulk on hole.

Reinstall screw.

Thanks all for ideas. For toothpick idea, help me visualize this. I put in uncut tooth picks, then caulk and wait to dry before inserting screw and cutting away excess?

Just stick toothpicks, one at a time in the hole, and break them off flush with the end of the gutter, so they aren't sticking out past it. Should only take a few to fill most of the hole. Doesn't need to be tightly packed. You're just giving the screw threads something to bite on.

Then, put a dab of caulk on the hole, to seal the body, and put the screw in. No waiting for it to dry, you can put the screw right in after the toothpicks and caulk.

It doesn't even have to be toothpicks. I've even used the splintered wood from the end of a broken piece of firewood once....

Do you eat Chinese with chopsticks? They come in handy for similar screw repairs. I can't use them worth a darn, but have a pair in the truck console for just those instances.

Thought I'd add a food twist to the thread.

Hopefully the screw was stripped from being over tightened/installed slightly off mark/etc, and not because the wood underneath was soft due to water intrusion. If you haven't already done so, it might be a good idea to check the whole gutter area make sure that there is no leak source.

Repair went smooth, then I recaulked the gutter. Hole was too small to check for water intrusion and I did not find any other issues. Thanks all for the support!

I've used this trick with one difference. I coat the tooth picks with glue before I stick them in the hole. That way they stick to the structure inside the hole and are not just jamming the screw in place.

I usually put wood glue on the tooth pick, then push it in and break it off level.
