F150 towing.

Anyone using a f150 or half ton to tow 8000lbs plus. I just purchased a 32bhds and am looking to hear from anyone towing the same. I have ran all the numbers and am sure I'll be under my limits.

All I can say is good luck. You will eventually be looking for a 3/4 ton truck if you tow that 32 footer enough.

F150 towing.

I pull my 2011 Eagle Super Light 318RLS with a 2016 Ram 1500 QuadCab w/ 5.7 Hemi. I use a FastWay E2 hitch.
No issues at all.
I know you asked about 1/2 ton Ford, But......

It may be within limits but it won't be fun. What is the payload capacity of your F150? I tow a 26bhsw and skirt just under my limits.. Maybe.. When loaded for camping.

When you have a dry hitch weight of over 800 lbs. it leaves very little room for cargo on any 1/2 ton truck. I guarantee once the hitch is actually loaded the 1/2 ton F150 will be over its cargo weight limit. The trailer has a GVW just shy of 10,000 lbs. Not a good situation for a 1/2 ton. Any grades or winds and it won’t be very comfortable at all.

Saying its no problem is not realistic, unless they only plan to travel in Florida, Nebraska or Kansas.

My payload is 2564lbs.. I have max tow and hd payload package. It towed my 25bh like nothing but the new trailer is a wee bit more weight.

I towed our Feather 23BHM with a 2016 5.0. Feather is 5151 empty, maybe 5700 going down the road. Power was fine, plenty of payload, but the rear end was a little soft. No sway but lots of porpoising. I traded it last summer on a 2017 f350 6.2 (took a warm bath on that). We made the mistake of looking at fifth wheels and just jumped to one yesterday, so the 350 is needed now. I really wouldn't have been comfortable with anything heavier than the Jay Feather behind the f150 but everyone is different.

It’s going to tow it ok, and you do have some good cargo numbers, so I will retract my previous cargo statement. Where you really notice the limitations on 1/2 ton trucks is accents, descents, and wind. If you are going through canyons something like salt river its gets pretty tough on a 1/2 ton.

I have a 3.5 eco boost as my work truck, so one thing I can tell you from experance. If you tow with a twin turbo, it sucks down gas like a fire hose. Great engine though...

Just to clear up any confusion. I am seasonel at a site. I only tow it 2 times a year about 300 km each way so really can not justify a new truck if this one will do. My current truck is a 2017 f150 3.5 EcoBoost 4x4 super cab with 8 ft box.
Payload 2564
Gvwr 7850
Rgaw 4800
Gcwr 17100
Max tow 11500.

Just depends where you go. One of my (now retired) technicians tows to fools hollow lake seasonally but it involves going through Salt River Canyon to get there. Needless to say, he replaced his RAM 1500 / 5.7 after his first season.

You should look at the rating of your hitch receiver. It should be printed on a sticker affixed to the hitch itself under your bumper. That trailer will have a tongue weight of 1200lbs easily. My F-150 is a MaxTow rated to 11,100lbs towing and my hitch is rated to max tongue weight of 1150lbs with use of a weight distributing hitch.

If your numbers work, I think you'll be OK just dragging it to and from your seasonal site each year. If you were planning on using it for regular travel to different destinations, I would suggest a 3/4 ton or better. Just take it slow and if it's a crazy windy day, wait it out.

my hitch has the same rating as yours, I will be towing it empty to and from the site so my tongue weight will be much lower that that. I hope.

Published dry tongue weight for that trailer is 895lbs, which is for a bare bones model and excludes the weight of the double 30lb propane tanks and the battery/batteries and whatever else you put in the trailer that contributes to tongue weight. It's going to be very close to that limit, if not a bit over likely. I'm not going to say don't do it, just be aware.

Truckerjt,

The reality is most 1/2 tons towing a 36ft, 10,000 GVWR TT isn't a great match, especially in less than ideal towing conditions (weather, hills/mountains, sudden maneuvers, etc.).

Your TV/TT combination may be fine....., but a CAT scale weigh-in under loaded conditions (full fuel, passengers, cargo, etc.) will confirm any reservations. We all have different loading habits and towing expectations that can influence what we considerable acceptable, and by what margin.

CAT scale how-to: https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...v-tt-3871.html

Please feel free to report back with your TV/TT CAT results, actual scaled 'ready-to-camp' weight information is a great reference for others. Most folks are surprised how quickly one's actual "available" TV payload capacity can be eaten up.

JOF "scaled" Tongue & Pin Weight thread: https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...t-57188-5.html

Just food for thought.....

Bob

yes I understand that, would be great to run out and buy a $90 000.00 new truck but like I said I am towing it twice a year empty. So really no need to spend that kind of money. I have read all kinds of these forums where guys are loading up 10 000 lbs and driving all over the country. Not my case. just looking for input from people who tow this kind of weight with a similar truck. If at any point I go over my legal limits or feel it is not safe then I will have no choice but to take a hit and upgrade my TV.

My experance with the below trailer which maxes out at 8,800 lbs, with a tung weight of probably around 800 lbs. I towed it with my Tundra CreMax, 10,400 GVW, 1,400 cargo. I added the TRD sway bar, Bilstein shocks, and firestone air bags. It towed ok, but a few trips out to Buckskin in Parker Az, I finally had enough. When those 30 MPH cross winds hit, you get tossed around. I quickly realized a 7,000 lb. truck just gets controlled by outside forces more than I liked.

My Tundra was free and clear so not too painful to get a new Truck. Just towed to Lost Dutchman camp site with 30 MPH cross winds, and what a difference. Plus, going from 401 ft. Lb. torque to 800 ft. Lb. is wonderful.

For what you are doing, you should be fine, but as we all know circumstances change and next thing you know, it doesn’t work as good anymore. We are not retired, therefore never know where we are going to camp, so need to be prepared.

Will it tow it? Yes.

Will it tow it safely? No.

You need a 3/4 ton.

I dont agree entirely. It will tow safetly as long as you stay on flatter ground and out of the winds and as long as you pay attention to the gas gauge.
