F250 6.2L Gasser Performance Mods...?

Hi All,

I have a 2017 F250 6.2L gasser and we pull a 2017 24RBS/Fiberglass. For the most part it pulls great with the exception of a 25+ mph headwind and going up hill! I normally run in 6th gear going 65-70 mph no problem, or stick it in 5th gear and 60 mph with the head winds.

I replaced the OEM air filter with a K&N; just the air filter and not a whole new cold air intake. I got an immediate +2 mpg in gas mileage with minimal increase in engine noise. Also, I use only mid-grade as it works best for me.

The wife and I are planning to get a 2019 280RSOK which is a good 2500+ lbs more to pull. My question is, has anyone done either a new performance chip and/or a new cat-back exhaust with a noticeable performance improvement? If so, what did you do and how significant of a change was it?

Thanks,
Paul

Time to look at a Diesel. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but once you get up to that size of trailer, eventually you will throw in the towel. Start planning.

The best truck I ever had was 1997 F350 Dually Powerstroke. I couldn't kill that thing and could tow my house! I should have listened to my gut when we bought the 2017 and got the diesel. Originally had a F150 5.4L with a 3.55 rear end and I thought I was going to pull the guts out of it pulling this 24RBS. It was terrible!

I nixed the 6.7L diesel because it was $9k more. The Ford 6.4L was a complete disaster and was gun shy of the 6.7L based on that. So, opted for the 6.2L to replace the F150. It's a 4x4 rated for 12,500 lbs towing and I added airbags.

The 280RSOK has a GVWR of 10K. I have just one more truck payment and if I could get just a few more horsepower, I think I'll be fine...hopefully!

I tow my Denali 37' with my old 2016 Dodge ram 2500 6.4L with no problem, you will be surprise the gas truck have, and no the diesel are a different animal and since your is a 2017 the technology that are in these new truck is just crazy.

I did have a performance tuner for it but for the newer truck you might not be able to find one, I'm sure they have them but it just I have been out of the loop since I bought my diesel.

Even if you don't have a tuner you will have no problem, you want win any races but you didn't get it for that.

Big1,

Man, that’s a long TT! I’ve been looking for a tuner, but it seems as though manufacturers only go up to 2016, not 2017. That’s why I thought maybe someone did a cat-back exhaust, too, or instead of a tuner. The 280RSOK is an HT, meaning half ton towable. No way would I ever pull a 10k GVWR RV with a half ton. Its 2500 lbs below my truck towing capacity. But a little extra power would be nice if I can get it.

ShawnR,

Wonderful!! I wonder why 5* never came up in my searches? I must have not had right keywords. I’m looking right now. Thanks for the heads up!

I love my 5* tuner for my F150 Ecoboost. Check out Stage3motorsports.com these guys are super knowledgeable and overall a great company to deal with. They are based in AZ.

I tow 9500 lbs with a 2018 Ram 2500 6.4, 4.10 gears with zero issues. And thats out here in Oregon where there's hills and mtns everywhere.
Fords 6.2 with 4.30 gears should do as well or better IMO.

Hmmm. I have the same truck as you but I have the 3.73 rear end and it pulls my 9200lb Eagle just fine here in the rolling hills of southern Indiana. If I lived in the mountains I'd have the diesel.

That’s good to hear. Mine has 3.73 gears as well. It pulls the 24RBS no problem and it’s maybe 7k to 7.5k lbs. I’m glad your truck is pulling 9500 AOK. Maybe I’ll wait and see how it does with the new TT before putting any mods other than the K&N filter that I’ve already done.

I'm really not a fan of the K&N style filters. I'm not convinced that they filter like the oem style paper filters.

Now I'm talking diesels and not gas engines, but we've dynoed trucks in excess of 500 HP and 1000 lb/ft tq to the ground before the factory air box and oem filter became a restriction. NA gas engines are capable of flowing nowhere near that amount of air. So I'm doubtful that there would be any real power gain if you tested it on the dyno back to back with the OEM unit.

Google "K&N and dusting" for quite a bit of reading on the subject.

Agreed and also I've read a lot on how the K&N filters fowl the MAF sensors in both gas and diesel engines.

Hmmmmm, TCNashville that gives me something to think about. I know that after I put it in (I did not change out the OEM air manifold), it got nearly 2 MPG better gas mileage. I have exactly the same truck as you; STX and all. I get a little leery before I buy anything based solely on WEB marketing jargon. Hence the reason for my original post from actual customer's experience.

I know the K&N is cleanable; but would a little extra oiling with the spray onto the filter prevent some of the dust getting past it?

Yeah I look at that and tuners are never cheap but if you can maybe look into that it might work, and I had a tuner when I had the 2014 Ram 2500 5.7L but I decided not to get one when I had the 2016 6.4L I had the 4.10 gears and man that thing pull like a beast. Let us know on which way you go.

Apparently it's the oil that fowls the MAF sensors and I base this solely on what I've read and not actual experience.

I went out and pulled the top of the cover off that has the K&N filter in. I looked down the air inlet and there is some very, very fine dust in there. Not much as you can barely see it when you wipe your finger across the surface. But, question is what is “MAF”?

Toss that K&N in the trash and put a good OEM filter in its place.

MAF is Mass Airflow Sensor.
