Why would the EPA care? How many millions of car and truck batteries are installed without a battery box to prevent batteries from leaking into the environment?

Good point, as cars.... rarely leaked any acid, excluding accidents. Put a box around it, filling up with water over the top of the battery is a little different situation. Granted, there may not be any acid escaping from the battery into the water.

Very good point

I would think the box is there to protect the battery.

The dealer can tell you any darned fool thing they want. And, they do. And then they'll fail to stand behind what they said.

You'll just have to take it on the chin this time. The case's primary function is to catch any acid that leaks out of your battery, and they often do a poor job of keeping rain out. The hole drilling option is a good one.

Also, as has been stated, if you're storing for an extended period of time, take the batteries home. The dealer might want to paint a rosier picture of leaving them on the RV, but the tend to be truth-challenged.

At least, now you know.
