Forecast for this spring, 3,000 mile roundtrip
I have a 2017 28BHBE. Not including some shorting distance outings, we are planning to go from TX to NY this summer, which is about 3,000 miles roundtrip. I put about 4,000 miles on my original tires last year but want to change them out to a more reliable tire before our trips this year. I am thinking about changing out the steel wheels to a better looking aluminum one.
Any recommendations on wheel/tire combo and where did you get it from?
TIA

My Jayco OEM aluminum rims are rated for 80psi. I upgraded last year to Goodyear Endurance, load range 'E' from Discount Tire.
VERY happy with them... both the tires and Discount Tire.

After 2 of our OE tires failed on the same leg of a trip we purchased G’year G614’s (an LT tire) and have about 20k on them at present. They are an $$$ tire but the Endurance had just appeared on the market and I wasn’t eager to be an “early adopter”. I replaced the OE rims with 110 psi rated ones from HySpec IIRC.
They’ve been trouble free this far.

What size and brand do you have now?
Now would be a good time to go up to 16's if you have the room.
Have you upgraded your suspension any, heavy duty shackles, wet bolts, equalizer, crossmembers?
Just some things to think about for long trips with a trailer.

Thanks all. If I recall correctly, I have 15 inch rainiers. No suspension mods. I have seen the wet bolt kit, not sure about the cross member, etc. what are the benefits? I have been leaning toward max is or gy endurance, but wanted to possibly move up to 16” with the wheel change.

This company supplies most of the RV industry with rims. They have tires as well.

I upgraded our OEM Rainier tires last year to Carlisle Radial Trail HD from Wal-Mart.
I went from LRD to LRE at 80PSI since my rims were rated for 80PSI anyway.
I put 11,000km on them last year and they look brand new still...which is what I would expect considering they essentially just roll along.

Load rating will be higher with a 16” over a 15”. For the Endurance, the highest 15” load rating is 2833# and the tire will make 734 rotations every mile traveled. The smallest 16” jumps to a load rating of 3420 and rotates 675 times each mile.

Thank you. I didn’t look at load range specs between sizes. That’s pretty significant.

A better selection for tires and the ability to go up on the load range.

We upgraded to Goodyear Endurance with 215 for a 14" tire - biggest we could get but may try for 15" sometime. Have over 22,000 on Endurance and they are still like new. Plan to swap them out after 3-4 years. Our trailer gross is 3,500 pounds and I doubt if we have that much. With tires I always figure the bigger and heavier load range the better.
Best wishes for your cross-country trip! Sounds like fun!

8900 mile, 2 month road trip last summer. Upgraded to GY Endurance also before the trip.
My Ranier china bombs were only 2 years old but didn't want to chance any failures on the trip.
America's tire here in Ca. Recommend both also.

We had a blowout on our camper, OE tires that were crap, and switched to the Goodyear Endurance “E” rated from Discount Tire and was very pleased with the tires and Discount Tire. Agree with oldmanAZ.
Of note: when I pulled the other three OE tires off all three were about to blow, the tread was pulled and stretched in all not normal directions, basically the tread looked like a snake on the tires. So glad I upgraded. They also held air better than the OEs

Tire upgrades
I have been using Maxxis tires since '05 until my current 2018 Jayco came equipped with Goodyear Endurance which as far as I can see are every bit as reliable as the Maxxis have been. I have never had a blowout or tire failure in 48 years of towing rv's. But, I never keep a tire longer than 5 to 6 years and always check tire date codes and refuse any tire older than 6 months when I buy them. As far as Carlisle tires are concerned I used to use them on my utility trailers. Never had one last very long. Broken belts were their consistent and constant failure mode. Perhaps they make a better "e " rated tire, but the ones I have used were for lighter duty requirements.

Thanks for all the inputs. I am definitely going to upgrade the tires. Now just trying to determine if I will change the wheels and step up a size.

I am following this thread closely as I too am planning a cross country trip this summer and want to replace/upgrade my tires and maybe the wheels too. How can you tell the rating on the wheels? I wouldn't want to upgrade the tires and find out that the wheels couldn't handle the change.
