Fresh water tank level when traveling?

Hello all, we are headed out for our first travel trip and wondered about the fresh water tank. We have been hooked up in a campsite so our tank is full, however we didn't think pulling with a full tank was optimal.....helpful ideas?

You could be travelling with alot of weight depending on how big your tank is. Water weighs about 8 pounds per gallon so you can do the math. Also depending on how far to your next stop and weather or not you'll need to utilize the bathroom while travelling you could leave a couple gallons in the tank. Remember it will be sloshing around which could affect towing. Alot of people travel with water so you just have to decide. We don't and let the tank drain as we leave the campground.

I’ll usually fill 5-10 gallons for longer road trips. For pit stops with the bathroom!

I wouldn’t go with a full tank. Too much extra weight and you probably don’t need it since you can fill at most campgrounds.

For drinking water, I use a 5 gallon water jug, filled at home.

Another thing to consider is the location of the water tank(s) in your trailer. If forward of the axle, it will increase the tongue weight. If behind the trailer axle, it will reduce the tongue weight. ALSO, if behind the axle, any sway tendency could be increased.

We have 2 water tanks (60+ gallons) behind the axle and travel with both tanks full of filtered water that we use for drinking and everything else. We have never had any issues and have never encountered a situation where we didn't have plenty of water.... like when the CG city water system failed on a weekend.

There should be a little white quarter turn valve near the tank under the vehicle.

When we travel we have just a few gallons in our fresh tank. We fill up before we park once we get to the campground.

How to check where the tanks are located? I would assume contacting Jayco is an option, but maybe there is another option.

Crawl under the trailer and follow the water line or lines from the drain spigot.
We have 80 gallon fresh water capacity (40 gallon x2). We normally travel with 10-15 gallons and then fill up when we get to our destination. It's enough to get us buy a day or two if the campgrounds we stop in our travels at doesn't have water hookup available. We have stopped for the night at more than one place that had a broken water line.

I'm a little confused. Just because you were hooked up at a site does not mean your fresh tank is full. Unless you filled it while you were at the site?

Other than that, I agree with the others, just keep enough in the tank for the essentials unless you're boondocking.
