Fresh water tank overfill

So I was filling our fresh water tank last night and as soon as it started to overflow just a little out the drain pipe at the bottom of the trailer, I stopped filling with eater. My question is this. Although I stopped flowing the water in right away, the overflow continued to run for at least two or three more minutes. I assume I over filled it, However what should I be doing to know when it is actually full? Or is this just the way it works? Feel free to enlighten this rookie!

You did everything right. The tanks are a little flexible, and there was probably some water in the fill pipe that hadn't settled yet, so that's more than likely what came out the overflow, especially if the trailer wasn't completely level. The tanks are also very shallow in design, so it doesn't take much for it to leak out that tube.

What happens is your filling faster than the vent is releasing the pressure. So by the time you see water coming out the tank is still pressured and pushing water out. Same happens on mine and maybe it don't hurt anything but I don't like putting that much pressure on the tank. So I just turn the water on about half way while filling and now when it get full it only pushes out about a half gallon of water before it equalize.
