Fridge fan install goes off when I close door

Hey, I’m an electrical idiot. I got one of those fans that you wedge/clip into fans. It works when I open the door, but turns off when I close the door. I hooked up both wires -should it only be 1? But that wouldn’t make a circuit. Do I need to bypass the fridge light I’m hooking it up to- confused

If you connected the power to the light, it'll go off when you close the door.

I have heard that they snake the positive lead thru the drain hole into the back and pickup a constant 12vdc source.

If you want to connect to the fridge light circuit, you will need to tap 12v power from the wires BEFORE they enter the switch that turns the light on/off!

I believe there are some fridges where the light is an option. My 2 Norcolds would not work that way. I had to go down the drain tube and tap a 12V source behind the fridge.

Thx ya all- yeah looks like I gotta go down the drain hole. Question is- is the 2 wires or just the live one-I understand that by clamping fan to fins -that is the ground? I don’t need to send the 2 wires down drain tube to make circuit -again sorry for being an electrical duufus!

Should only need the +12v line down the drain hole. You can splice into the ground for the light without issue which is what I did with the internal fan installs attached to my ARP Fridge Defend. You can see the splice circled in green below.
