Wondering what kind of sites you are talking about. Are these places just a spot out there with a great view but not in a campground as such? Haven't camped in Arizona so am not familiar with rules for camping outside of designated campgrounds. Is that what you are referring to as "dry camping"? We have rented motorhomes twice up in Alaska and in the combined 4 weeks out, we stayed in a campground [$$] just 5 nights [4 of them in Denali NP]. The rest of our sites were just pull outs on one of the highways or a wilderness area [which is about 95% of the State]. Camping near a road is not a problem because there is so little traffic once outside of Anchorage. Great way to see the beauty. Up there you can overnight anywhere as long as you're not blocking the road or on private property without permission. Might make it out west one of these years so interested in what you're talking about in AZ.

Hey Bassdogs. Yes, they are unimproved sites along the forest service roads and fire roads. You can camp anywhere within 300 feet of the road, however there are hundreds and hundreds of locations that have been slightly improved by previous dry campers (boondockers). Basically a rock fire ring and a two track road off of the fire road into the trees. There is no charge for dry camping in all but 1 of the national forests here in Arizona. That one requires a pass that is basically 6 dollars per 24 hour period. You need that pass even to hike. I attached a photo of one such spot. No water within about 15 miles or so. this location only had about 3 to 4 cars a day pass by on the FS road. There are so many beautiful locations, we had to start marking them on GPS so we would remember and give them a try. We try to get out at least 10 times each year. that is easier to do here in Arizona. In a TT there is really no off season. Let us know if you ever do get out this way.
