I have also learned to check the height of the canopies (not the hard way, thank goodness). I don't think you will have trouble with your current unit, but it is good to get in the habit. I second the motion of using truck stops. If the gas station part is tight or busy, you can always drop the trailer in the back lot, fill up, and re-hook. I now tow a 42 foot toy hauler that is 13'6" tall and I will unhook and get called chicken or rookie or whatever rather than risk the trailer. As you tow though, you will get more and more comfortable with doing this. Just smile, shrug, and say "first time" to any onlookers .

With our smaller TT (24') fuel stops weren't much trouble. With the 5th (39') I plan the stops carefully. I got into a tight spot once and quickly decided saving a few pennies/gallon wasn't worth the angst. Truck stops for me now (diesel).

I think you only get 5 cents per gallon, not 10%.

I love this thread as I thought I was the only one paranoid about fueling up. I won't pull in anywhere I can't see or know a clear way out. I've made the Montana/Vegas trip so many times I pretty much know where to stop but somehow the gas tank never seems to need filling in quite the same spot every trip). On the trip down I got caught in St. George - I don't like getting off the highway there and had to drive around for a bit before I spotted an easy in and out. Will be sure to check out Google maps before I head home.

This has been a good thread to me also I'm a rookie headed from NC to Disney this summer and have been thinking the same thing. I'm all about the looking for fuel between 1/2 and 1/4 tank.

I've never been in that situation where I couldn't get I or get out of a gas station; I guess I've been lucky. But if I ever was, I wouldn't hesitate to drop the trailer out of the way someplace, fill up, then re-hook when I'm done. And if anyone snickers at me, well, better safe than sorry. They don't have to pay my insurance deductibles if something goes wrong.
