I stopped by our local Camping World after work today and the had some that were 27" and 150lb lift for $18. I am curious if they would be overkill. The last thing i want is for the bed to come flying up in the middle of the night. LOL

I also found these online http://www.atomicmall.com/view.php?id=631085 26" and 120lbs. Not a bad price either, $16 each plus shipping.

Everything I read and the folks on here do not recommend anything above 120lb

I think i agree. 150lbs seems like alot. The bed is just not that heavy even with the topper and blankets.

It would be bad to get thrown out of bed in the middle of the night by a powerful strut.

Take more then that to lift me out of bed though! But seriously I think 120 would be the max...

I know it wouldn't be much. But what about moving the strut close to the head of the bed. Say 32 inches instead of 28 from the foot? Then adjust the top of the strut accordingly

They have a little booklet at camping world and it says 150 lb for a queen. And I can tell you, I installed 120s last week an we are camping this weekend and with the queen mattess, mattress topper, and pillows and comforter, the 120s will not hold it up. So, I'll be getting 150s when I get home.

Thanks for the update!!! That was what i was waiting to hear!! Our local CW has them in stock so I guess I will be stopping one day after work next week. I would love to see a pic of how you mounted the brackets on yours.

Ok I'll try to get some pictures if I can get my wife to hold it up while I take some.

Ok sorry for the delay. We have a 6 week old so was hard finding time to get pictures over the weekend while we were camping. ha

So a word on the whole 120 lb vs 150 lb. I noticed when I took the sheets and conforter off when we were getting ready to come home (still a couple pillows on the bed and the mattress and the mattress topper) that the 120 lb shocks held it up just fine. So, take that for what its worth on if you should buy 150 or 120.

Here are some pictures of how mine are mounted.

Here is the whole shock from the side. I used the measurements someone else posted in an earlier post on here. I believe the center hole on the bottom bracket is at 28" from the outside edge of the end of the bed frame and the top bracket on the bed platform is 42" from the the outside edge of the bed frame.

How bracket is mounted to bed frame. Mine had a thin piece of aluminum looks like that wraps around the corner as you can see. I just drilled through this and put my bracket over it as you see. (oh, pre drill ALL your holes! As I'm sure you know, this wood is very light weight and will split easy if you don't drill first)

Here's how I mounted the shock to the bed platform.

after looking at those pictures, esp the 1st one. I might could move the bracket mounted to the frame, down towards the floor a little and then maybe it would make more of a "T" with the shock and bed platform. I might not be getting the full force of the 120 lb shock as it sits right now. Here is a drawing showing what I mean (don't be jealous of my mad artistic abilities. )

How it is now, the shock is not pushing straight against the bed platform so may not be using its full 120 lb of lift.

How it would be if I move the shock mount a little down towards the floor to get more of a "T" when the bed is opened all the way. I might also have to move the bracket mounted on the bed platform, towards the foot of the bed a little as well, but easily done.

So do you guys think that would make a difference?? Or no

I got mine done this weekend. Works great, but I forgot to take pictures. the 2 hinges that Jayco put on the plywood were crap, so I removed those after I had already bent them anyways and put 4 stronger hinges from Home Depot on. It opens nicely, but it is tough to close. Maybe that will change once there are sheets and pillows on the bed, or after it gets a little worn. I used the 100lb struts, but only the bottom half of the bed opens on ours so I think they'll do just fine.

Just curious have you checked the length the trust are when the bed is closed? Wonder if maybe they are not fully compressed and you could get away with just moving the top. Maybe I'll go climb in mine( it's empty) and do some measuring

yeah I could do that. I left about a 2" buffer (I know, plenty ha) for when its fully closed so I could move it some for sure.

Thanks for the pics ArkJayco and the drawings!!! This helps a ton. I hope to pick mine up later this week but will stick with the 120 lb. I think that your second sketch would probably help the shock work a little better. One question... with moving the shock to be more vertical do you still get enough height from the 19" or would you still prefer the longer ones?

Just got mine in. I recommend mounting the bottom bracket. Then climbing inside closing the lid and measuring the closed length and mounting the top bracket. I found my frame is not 100% square. And for opening height. My lid opens 36 inches. I'm 6'3" and that puts in right at the middle of my chest.

Great tip!! A 36" opening sounds like plenty. What length strut did you use? Any pics of your install??

BTW... that must have been a sight... a 6'3" guy trying to move around under that bed LOL Just kidding!! :hihi:
