Mine is slow to throttle up. But I guess you get what you pay for.

k, I have Coleman MAch 3 plus. Called tech person at Airxcel and this was his formula to calculate starting amps. This AC has Start kit from factory. Total amps is 15.3 amp. Compressor is 11.9 and Fan on high draws 3.4 amps. Formula is compressor amp x2.5+high fan amp= amps needed for initial start/cycle. So mine comes to 33.15 Amp which requires 3800 watt generator. These are conservative/max estimates. He said that on avg. these ac's with hard start kit will need probably 21-24 amp to startl. So any generator with 2500 running -2800 peak watts will do at sea level. At my altitude of 5000 ft Yamaha 2400 isch will lose 420 running watts. Yamaha has extra surge of 400 watts and that would lose 70 watts for altitude alone not considering high temps that can get above 100F here. So at my altitude Yamaha 2400 ishc will not do. 3000 watt would have no issue if everything else is not drawing amps. Not sure how some people say they are running 13.5 AC with Yamaha 2400 above 5-6000 ft.

My suggestion is to buy your generator right the first time because it is cheaper than buying twice. I went for the Honda 3k and haven't regretted my decision once. I typically use it at race tracks but also use it every couple of days to charge the batteries when camping in parks w/o electric hookups. Running in the bed of my truck with the exhaust facing into our campsite you can barely hear it from the road.

Do you use 50 Amp service or does your set up trip 30 Amp breakers?

Look at the amps on the breaker that your AC is pulling off of in your converter. If it was constantly running amok of that breaker rating, you'd be popping it all day long. If your genny can put out the amps that your A/C breaker is rated for, you should be ok.

Can I ask a ignorant question? Besides heavy gas usage what would the downside be of running your TV with a 30amp inverter attached?
This is assuming you don't have loud mufflers. I would think that would be more quiet than a portable generator, less cost than a gen purchase and have enough power to run everything. Understand, this would not be for overnight usage, only for keeping your TT cool during the day and charging batteries.
Like I said, please forgive me if this is an ignorant question.

The short answer is your TV alternator is not capable of the kind of current that would be required to power the TT air conditioner. Understand that 30 amps at 120 volts from an inverter would require 300 amps at 12V from the TV. This does not even consider the huge wire size and inverter losses. Even with the inverter connected a few inches from the battery this would be impractical.

Here's another generator issue.....can I run just a generator or should I get an invertor generator? Not sure if I need the invertor part to assure that I get clean power to my electronics? I can get a generator for ~$400 bucks but add the invertor part and I'm looking at $800++.
And also, what's this carb specific stuff on a generator? I don't live in Calif. so is that really necessary? That also raises the price.

There are two issues at play here. First, your "just a generator" (non-inverter) are typically too noisy. Second, you really should not subject your electronics (TV, refrigerator control electronics, etc) to the "dirty" waveform of a non-inverter generator. This is one time that saving money could cost you in the future. Not to mention irritated neighbors.
If you don't live in California don't worry about the "carb compliant" garbage.

Each 6 volt battery is actually 220AH, when two are in series you still have only 220AH. Then take two others in series and connect them with the other pair in parallel for a total of 440AH. I would hook up a 30 amp farm & ranch charger, there is no way a stock converter would do anything for you while boondocking. Returning from camping takes the stock charger probably 4-5 days to get the batteries back to it's maximum charge ability. I'm replacing my entire charging approach this Spring. I'm installing the Magnum MSH3012-M inverter/charger. This charger allows you to set the voltage to 14.8 and is a 4-stage charger. It will insure we fully charge the batteries and that we do not over charge them. solar is next. Long answer to say 4 batteries is not a problem, and I do charge them separately.

I hear good things about the Dometic for $800, runs a 13.5k and is quiet. Do not own one but my RV repair guy recommended it. I looked at the specs and it looks good. Much less than Honda and according to those that bought them and reported on it online is pretty quiet.

If its this one: https://www.dometic.com/enus/America...ctdataid=95192 I'd be wary about it. Any spec sheet that doesn't list the sound in dBA is probably doing so for a reason. Its less then 1/2 the weight of a EU3000is !!! That's amazing, but it makes me wonder where they made compromises.

I am wondering if any of you guys actually measured start amp draw on coleman 13.5 Mach using clamp on ammeter? I am planning to test this in the spring before purchasing any generator.

I agree. I have seen many ads for generators sporting 68db and still use the word quiet in their description.
In addition the generator you reference is a poor choice in the US. It is a 50 Hz unit. While it will run the air condition the compressor will run hotter on 50Hz and shorten its life.

THREEBUTCHERS, I did find about 5 different ads for that generator. All but one stated 50 Hz. Since both are apparently available one needs to verify they are getting the expected 60 Hz unit.

We use a pair of 2000 Yamahas'. Alternate days between them when AC is not needed, bridge parallel for the AC. Seem quiet by themselves, but off eco throttle they make a noise enough to bother any close neighbors.
