Getting in and out of the top bunk? (26BH)

So its my 10 year old son who will use the top bunk - given its full size (same as bottom bunk) he can't just step up on the lower bunk. Does anyone have any tips for getting in and out? A ladder of sorts maybe?

Thanks!

There are some great threads on ideas for bunk ladders. If you look at the thread below and Jammer's posts #23 and #28 there are measurements and photos.

http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f3...h-11454-3.html

I made a similar bunk ladder using round hardwood dowels for rungs and 1x2 fir side rails. Side rails are screwed to the bunks in 4 locations. I bought 3" L brackets and bent them to go over the padded face trim and screw to the bunk under the mattress. It keeps the ladder from damaging anything the bunk trim and is absolutely solid. I also have a few extra rungs with 5 in total - rungs about every 10". Works great for the kids and narrow enough that it doesn't get in the way of anything.

I am 6'3 and over 200lbs and it handles my weight without issue.

I bought the one below from camping world. I actually cut a few inches off and it works perfect.

This is the same ladder that I bought for our new 26BH. We have a 7 & 10 year old. I took 3-1/2" total of the length of the 60" ladder, split it up between the top and the bottom and taking in consideration the 1/2" thickness of the rubber bumpers on the bottom of the ladder. I pressed the press nuts in the top of the ladder down about 1/4" past where I needed to cut, then made the cut. Filed the ends, put the hook brackets and bumpers back on and it's good to go. Pretty rugged, well built and fairly light weight.

Would that Stromberg Carlson ladder work if it was more upright? We don't have much space as the ladder will be right by the main walkway so would like it as upright as possible.

Once my son is out of his top bunk in the morning we put it in his bunk. At night we push it straight up against the bunks (vertically) when we need to pass by. It's a tight area in general but it works very well for us...

We store the ladder on the top bunk when not in use as well.

The instructions below say no more than a 11° angle, so I think you could probably cut it so that the bottom is a few inches out at the bottom, but it may be harder to get off the bunk. The top of the ladder has brackets that hook over the bunk edge trim, so it doesn't pull away.

Here is the instructions from the manufacturer:
