Look for my post here titles "Guess the damage" or something similar. I had a Marathon come apart on the highway that did several thousand dollars worht of damage. I have to admit t hat Goodyear really stepped up to the plate and paid for everything, and quickly. That tells me they know there is an issue however.

I always inspected my tires before every trip and check air pressure, there was nothing out of the norm before the trip.

I am changing to Maxxis this year. Just need to save a few bucks for them, looks kike it'll run about $700 to have them balanced and installed.

I will link my earlier thread when I get to my computer (posting from my phone).

That may be less expensive than making a great product.

My current rig came with LR-E Marathons from our favorite foreign country. As soon as they are 4 years old, assuming they last that long, they will be replaced with another brand.
I which mine came with E load range. My 2012 321RLTS came with load D. If you do the math with a 14,500 GVWR and each tire max's out at 3,000 and the hitch weight is 2,500 then the tires have there gross weight on them. I probably won't have the 5th W that heavy but I will be keeping a close eye on them and replace when necessary.

Good information in the Goodyear bulletin. The rated at 65 mph should be a high enough speed for all of us. I don't normally run over 60 mph even on the interstate. I have been pulling travel trailers for a long time and have seen lots of damage from other units pulled at excessive speeds. When those steel belted radials let loose, they take a lot of collateral damage with them!

Yes they do. However, the tires should be made to maintain 65 for extended periods. My blowout happened at 65, but then again I think that's a manufacturing issue. Going to slow can be as much of a safety risk as going to fast (no, I am not advocating going over 65) its just that I see a RV's at 55 Oor less as well.

They issued that statement originally in 2006.

When it came out I had already had 3 Goodyear Marathon failures.

So, I tried increasing the pressure 10 psi as the statement said. I had 3 more Goodyear Marathon failures.

I never tow faster than 65 mph, the tire inflation pressure is checked and maintained religiously before every tow and I've had my rig weighed at each wheel by RVSEF and was under the rated load on every wheel. I did the weigh in under maximum load conditions: Fully loaded for a trip, everyone and gear on board and ALL the water tanks completely full (fresh, grey and black).

They must have a design flaw or manufacturing problem. No more Goodyear Marathons for me.

I'm going to share a couple photos showing one of my Marathon tires. I have about 2,000 miles on these, date code Oct 2010. I took these photos to a reputable tire shop, and the fellow said this dimpling happens where the belts overlap. He said cheap tires are prone to this kind of thing. Also said not to worry about this, but if I start to see a bubble, that would be something to worry about. Even so, I don't trust these Marathons tires.

I've seen lots of tires that lhave those "dimples". It's usually in the tread where you grt the bubbles.

I have Marathons on my TT and after over 15,000 miles they still look good. But mine were made in the good ol' USA, not China.

There's a small amount of sidewall dimpling, but as was said before, I don't think that's a durability issue. I'll probably keep them on for another 5000 miles or so before I replace them.

Ya thank for the pics. I may be replacing mine before this summers trip. Any body want to buy 4 goodyears with very low mileage on them?

You are lucky to have US made Goodyears. They only did that for a short time. They currently made in China.

It's time, not miles, that kill trailer tires. Replace them before 5 years of age (stamped on the sidewall). I've towed many miles. They age out or fail before the tread wears out.

Do wheel covers extend life?

I keep my tires covered whenever it sits for a while. Will that extend tire life?

Thanks
Grant

Grant, I keep my tires covered as well.

Even if kept covered, the tires should be replaced every 5 years.
