Would love to take the HD Ultra on camping trips out west next year. Anyone ever haul one in the bed of a p/u while towing a TT ??
Thanks

No. But I will eventually. Have a road king and it should just fit on an angle with the gate off

Without a toy hauler it's gonna be a pita

Absolutely! We take our cycle with us almost every camping trip! I did have to make a special slide in unit because my truck is a shortbed but it works great.

The obvious thing to consider is the added weight of a full dresser and the impact on the available TV payload capacity (don't forget TT loaded tongue weight is subtracted from TV payload capacity as well).

I looked into putting my Road King Classic in the bed of my truck while towing my TT a couple of years ago. I didn't see myself riding my HD up a basic ramp into the bed of my TV (like I did dirt bikes), so I also considered the weight of various electric ramp systems.

The sum total of all the loaded weights in my situation (traveling solo) max'd out my 2500HD's GVWR, leaving me with no GVWR weight wiggle room which I like to have. It should be noted that my loaded TT tongue weight is 1,300lbs.

Knowing what you are towing with and what you are towing would make a lot of difference.

I guess I need to figure out some numbers. It would just be awesome to camp and ride is all...I would need some long ramps to keep the angle down for sure unless I had about 4 guys there to help me wheel her up and down the ramp..lol

Prolly won't be long and I will be on a trike. Just came back from the Smokies a few weeks back. Every year try to get down there..Love the scenery, the mountain riding. We went down last year in October to check out the leaves. Only prob was at the time in higher elevations ran into some frost and flurries...and oh yeah the bear hunters trying to get the bears near the road to shoot them..strange to come around a corner to have a bunch of guys along the guardrail with rifles in hand. In Ohio we can't have guns loaded on the road ..period.. Enjoy your rides

Been riding two wheels since 1963. After our two latest bikes, Goldwings, last yr I decided to own the fact I just wasn't comfortable at holding the bike up w/wife and I on it at stops anymore. Bad 66 yr old knee dictated it was time to reconsider..we have been really enjoying the trike. Been riding rice burners since 1964, time too own a Harley...another item crossed off the bucket list...east Tn is very pretty this time of yr. we have ridden the Tail of the Dragon several times on GWs, looking forward to doing it on the TG. Yeah, there are hunters and then there are the hunter wannabe. Keep the sunny side up...

I think that's the best next step at this point because 1/2 ton's can use up their limited payload capacity pretty fast when you have a TT in tow.

If you really want to know how much TV payload capacity you have to work with...., take your loaded TV (fuel full, passengers, etc.) to a CAT scale and weigh it... simple process. Subtract the CAT scale weight from the GVWR noted on your TV's driver's door. The remaining weight is what you have for your TT's loaded tongue weight, WDH, Harley, and any other TV cargo not accounted for at the CAT scale. That's where I started.

Wife and I both have Harleys. She has been riding her own scoot since 03 and I started when I was 16 (64 now). We have an enclosed motorcycle trailer and if we want the scoots on a trip she pulls the scoots and I pull the camper. Yes, that's expensive but it can be worth it.
Also need to let the campground know that you have an additional trailer. There are double sites (again expensive) and there are ways to store the trailer at other campgrounds.

@satchmo...have done the skyway and don't forget the Blue Ridge parkway...we have done part of it when we had the 1500 GW...
since this is a jayco forum, I better say something about the great jayco line....we're absolutely a jayco family, we're on our 4th one. bought our first new one
in 1987 or 88...long time ago. have stayed true to the brand ever since...down sized to the 184BH in 2011....we're two old military retirees in our 60s and spending our grand kids inheritance..have been doing a mighty fine job of it since 1991...you guys take care and enjoy the Fall Colors...ride safe and play safe...

Getting back to the original post, a heavy bike, that big of a trailer, and a 1/2 ton truck is asking a lot of the 1/2 ton truck.

I find a slight rise to back my pickup to, then pull out the ramps and drive an ATV on. Same to take it off. If you've got too much weight with the HD for the tailgate, remove it, although it's a whole lot easier to remove the gate on my '85 F250 than the 350. Might need some help backing it off, but doable.
