Help! 2020 slx8 267bhsw

Hello! New Jayco forum member. I am strongly considering purchasing a new 267BHSW with Rocky Mountain package and Baja package. My tow vehicle is a 19 RAM 1500 5.7 Hemi with 3.21 gears. Rated for 8400 pounds tow cap and 1490 pounds payload. I understand how this all works. I just need to know some real feedback and experiences towing this specific trailer with a half ton I have a e2 fastway WD hitch. I’m going to eventually be adding some type of suspension support. Please give me some replies to this! Thanks

I have a 284slxbhsw I tow with a f150 I have from MI to Gettysburg and to Montana with no problems. I use and swear by the equalizer 4 sway/wd. I don’t feel I was ever pushing the truck or myself.

Hope that helps

Jim

Greetings Ernie. I had a F150 Max Tow Ecoboost with 3:73’s. I loved the truck and had it set up perfectly. We pulled it all over the Rockies. I went to the scales and made sure we were as safe as possible. Reality is, I was always a few hundred pounds over on the rear axle and that is with nothing in the bed of the truck and always loading everything perfectly in the trailer. I always took my time and never had any scary moments, but if the wind kicked up we were doing 45mph to keep it straight down the road. I went to a 3/4 ton and when I say night and day difference I mean it. The 3/4 ton is a gasser and can’t hold a flame to the Ecoboost as far as pure pulling power, but the stability and stopping power is so much better. Those same winds that made me slow down with the F150 now I just keep going at 65mph like it’s nothing. Can a 1/2 ton work, of course it can. I truly believe everyone that says their 1/2 ton doesn’t know the trailer is back there hasn’t pulled with a bigger truck. I’m that maniac that does tons of research and really believe I had great set ups on both trucks. Please give me a shout if you have anymore specific questions. Good luck.

Yea man. I don’t argue with pure weight and more power. The 3/4 ton is built to work and haul heavy. Only problem is I just bought my 19 Ram last summer and I’m stuck with it for at least 2 more years before I can even think of trading it in. The place I’m in is do I max out my trucks capability for this gorgeous 2020 267BHSW Rocky Mountain with Baja, and drive carefully for 3 years, or should I just roll with my pop up for 3 years and upgrade my truck before upgrading my trailer. Decisions... lol none of which are currently as important as maintaining my health but stil.

Ernie I am right around 7000 lbs loaded. I generally travel around 65 mpg. I have hit strong winds in Iowa and Nebraska I did slow up but never had a white knuckle ride. I swear by the equalizer I up graded after 1 season with the sway bar and it made all the difference in the world.

Jim,
Thanks for your view. I want to be able to take this on long road trips and if I can’t tow it safely it completely defeats the purpose of even owning it. Know what I’m saying? If all I do is go from Denver to the mountains and boondock (which is awesome) wind is not a high concern and the mountains don’t get as crazy as the low lands and it’s plains. In that scenario the overall ability to tow is the challenge and I feel the truck has enough power even having a 8200 tow capacity. I currently have the e2 fastway hitch with the 600/6000 trunion bars. I’ll need to upgrade those to the 1000/10000 bars. My current set up is great for my Somerset e3 deck pop up, which had been a fantastic camper. I just want something that I can hook up, venture out and explore with the family.

You check out my set up in my signature. I do have the 3.92 rear end though because I had my camper before I upgraded the truck. It pulls better than the tundra that I had, but the stability isn't as good. Ram gives such a smooth ride without towing with the coil springs, that when you do tow, it is a little squishy. I will be looking to add some sort of support. My dry weight is 6800, so I am guessing I'm around 8000 lbs. I don't put much in the back as I am near payload already. I will usually throw everything in the camper and tow it.

Hey Ernie I assumed Aurora, IL for some reason. I’m in Castle Rock. We all need to do the right thing and keep our distance, but maybe when this settles you can cruise down here and we can hook my trailer up to your truck just to see the squat. The Ram coils will be tested and the gearing will struggle going up the hills. I have the Andersen No Sway. It is by far the lightest distribution hitch out there and I needed to save weight with the F150.

How about I just sell you my whole set up? The exterior color scheme is nicer on mine. Everything is in perfect condition and I have done all the little mods and fixes. I love this trailer. If your kids are young don’t let them play sports and have friends. The older these little brats get the harder it is to pick up and roll out of town for camping. Ha!

Towing

I had the SLX and Ram with 5.7 but 373 rear, Equalizer system. Worked so well I didn't use tow haul nice.

Wind is the issue. I had a ecoboost f150 and similar trailer in Montana. Never had a issue stopping or going but did have some issues with wind. I upgraded to a diesel f350 which is way overkill from a power and braking perspective but I could then tow at 80 on the Montana Wyoming interstates and wind was no longer an issue.

I had a Ram 1500 Hemi when I bought our 2017 267BHSW. The Hemi had plenty of engine, but was not enough truck. I had a bright blue 1500, moon roof, heated/ cooled seats.
Now I have a plain white 25000 6.4 Hemi. The 1500 was a scary tow. I had some fish tailing and some brake challenges.
None with the 2500. It tows with aplomb. I almost bought the diesel, but 10K was too much of an upgrade.
If you like the truck, I'd advise looking for a smaller/ lighter trailer. If you like the trailer, be prepared to upgrade at some point. I towed it 3 times and that was enough for me. My next outing was at Disney and towing 1,000 miles with the 1500 with the grandgirls in the back seat was not something I was going to chance.
