I just use some WD40 when it gets really dry looking. It helps me to hook and unhook.

However, if I were doing a lot of long distance towing I would probably use some grease to stop wearl

As do I. Seems to work fine. Obviously, it doesn't last very long. Either every trip or every other trip needs a new spray.
