Honda EU7000i generator - different question

Hi all,

Thank you in advance. I've read most of the generator posts here and I hope I didn't miss this question.

I'm interested in the Honda EU7000i generator, but the weight is a concern at 261 dry. I currently use (and like) 2 Honda EU2000i together.

If you have one of these or a similar sized generator, how are you hauling it around? I know I could ramp it into the truck bed, but I don't want to haul a ramp just for that.

Does one of those cargo carriers hold them ok?

thoughts?

Thanks!

Wow 261 dry use to have dirt bikes that's about what they weighed. And I was 15 years younger, heavy. My question when it rains obliviously you are not running it. But do they have to be covered? We have the 2000s and when we are in state parks. The neighbors frown after a couple hours! Happy Trails

The weight jumps huge just from the 2000 (45 pounds) to the 3000 (131 pounds). At least the 7000 has wheels.

We have the Yamaha 3000 that weighs around 150 -- roughly equivalent to the Honda. We tried it on a cargo carrier mounted to the bumper at the rear of our TT. The add-on receiver was rated for 600 lbs, the carrier was rated for 500 lbs, I though we were good. However, with that much weight hanging out behind our Hummingbird 17RK, I didn't like the way things towed with our WDH. But what was worse is that the trailer was over weight and the wheels on the generator had deformed the mesh on the bottom of the cargo carrier as they tried their best to punch through. This was on just a 40 mile round trip.

So we use a repurposed extendable dog ramp to wheel the thing into the back of our Landcruiser. We then cinch it down with a pair of 6' ratcheted tie down straps hooked to the 3rd row seat mounts (the 3rd row seats are in the garage). it turns out that my wife and I can get the generator in and out without too much trouble. The fact that the dog ramp has a curb on the edges that prevents the generator from rolling off the edge is a real plus.

You are correct, for this to work we need to haul the ramp.

Two comments on your situation:
1) I couldn't imagine doing this with a heavier generator, much less on that's almost twice the weight.

2) If I have a pickup truck, I would be real tempted to tie the generator down and lock it in place in the bed and run it from there.

I did consider two smaller units, but I wanted the electric start, on the off chance that my wife would need to start it. Plus, I've never had very good luck with pull-start gas operated equipment. Also, I haven't spent the money yet, since it's rediculously expensive, but the Yamaha 3000 has a remote start option, that seems like it might be worth it some day. Probably after one too many cold trips outside to either start or stop the thing.

I was using our forklift at work to load it in the bed of my truck when I was using my eu7000i, its all of 260 pounds. I left it in bed of truck when I got to the campground and ran it. I had it tied down with straps and a chain with a lock, On Monday I would take it back out. You could roll it up ramps up inside the bed of truck but id have a buddy with you helping. its a great generator, to bad mine and 2 eu2000i are paper weights in the garage now,, lol

I have one of the big Yamaha generators 6500w I think. Not inverter though. I mainly use it around the house. As far as moving it, it has the wheel kit so it can be scooted around that way but it also has a cage around it with a big loop in the middle. Perfect for a chain that is hooked to a grab hook on the front end loader on my John Deere tractor. No way I would want to mess around with lifting this. Before I had the loader I would back up to my 4 post hoist and transfer it to that and then down. Did a come along in a tree once as well. Or I just left it in the bed of the truck.

For the camper I have a 3000w inverter.

I don't know that I would trust it on a carrier on the back of the camper but I guess if you had a beefy frame mounted hitch then maybe. Any reason you need one this big? Are you trying to run the entire campground? My 6500 will run my entire house including the well pump. Seems kind of a bit like overkill and you are just going to use more fuel.

Interesting information. I'm starting to think that to get the benefits of this generator, I'll have to accept the ramp idea.

I'm getting a 34RSBS with dual A/C etc

I have the Honda eu7000is genset. Doesn't get any better!

I load mine into my truck bed with a foldable 1 ton shop crane. I lift the genset onto truck and then manoeuvre it to the front of the bed as the genset has wheels. I secure with 2 ratcheting straps. Piece of cake and piece of mind!
I leave it in the truck during the whole trip, only unload when back home.

I've got the Honda EU6500is, which is virtually identical to the EU7000i, except that it has a carburetor instead of the fuel injection. I carry my generator in the basement of my fifth wheel. I use ramps and a winch to load it and unload it. Here are the details:

I get all the power I need from my pair of Honda 2000's. Just out of curiosity, why the need for 7000 watts?

How often will you be camping w/o hookups when you would need to run both A/Cs? In my opinion, 7000w's and the weight that comes with it is hard to justify if the need for that much power is infrequent.

That's my feeling and why I asked the question. The long term hassle of hauling around 300 pounds of generator for the once a year I might run both ac's wouldn't be worth it to me. Half the time I only run one of my 2000's and if ac is needed then I only turn both.

I went through the same process earlier this year. Priced out a hitch for the camper that would carry the weight of a larger generator, priced out a rack that would handle not only the static weight of a large genny, but also the dynamic weight of a generator bouncing around at the tail end of our fifth wheel. Even if I could get it into the box of the truck, my Pull Rite takes up too much space and the generator wouldn't fit. For us the best option was to only run one ac and get a pair of 2000's. Easy to move around, option to only run 1, and no modifications needed to the camper. Plus I can use the 2000's for work around the farm if needed.

That being said, being a Honda, the 7000 is a great generator and each to their own and best of luck.

That crane is interesting. Great replies, thank you!

You are correct about the need for the 7000i, I'm still considering.

My 2 current 2000i work great for my 27RLS, although if I have the AC on and run the microwave they strain. We are moving up to a 34RSBS with dual AC and the electric fireplace etc. Plus we live and camp in AZ where it can be pretty warm even up north.

What I'm really questioning is whether the dual 2000i would still be enough. In doing that I look at other options. I see I could do dual 3000i, but they are 131 pounds a piece. So the 7000i comes into view as a singular solution to everything....minus the weight issue. I want to stay with the quality and quiet of Honda.

I should also mention I'm married, and when momma wants to get her cool on the cool needs to work.

dangerdave,

there are 2 different honda 3000i.

there is the one your referencing and the light weight model 3000i handi that is similar to the champion 3000. they weigh about 78 pounds, not as quiet, but really nothing comes close to the EU3000i. the handi has a smaller fuel tank and can be paralleled

The 3000i handi is interesting. Right a bit louder. Not sure if 5-ish db is a lot.

Decibels are logarithmic, 3db one way or another is either a doubling or halving of the perceived noise level, so 5db would be almost 4x louder.
