Hot water/heat caused plastic plumbing connecting sink drain to un-couple

Hi guys,

I turned the water heater on just the other day to notice half an hour later, water pooling up under the sink area then while drying the water, found that the plumbing that connects the sink drain's immediate next pipe has come uncoupled (possibly due to hot water or heat or a combination of the two)

What type of bonding substance should I use? On tv i see them coat plastic plubming in some sort of "liquid cement" then couple the piping together to achieve a permanent seal.

JF,
I am assuming your talking about a smooth PVC or CPVC plastic union.
If it's gray pipe, I believe its CPVC and white pipe is PVC. It should say on the side also if you have a long enough length.
You need to clean it the best you can and then go to any big box and get the correct gluing compund.
They also sell a primer, I recommend that especially since it was lightly bonded before.
Just tell the guy or gal in the plumbing department that you have white or gray piping and they'll point you to the correct bonding/primer products.

Best regards,
Doug

If it is black, it should be ABS Pipe. Still should be able to pick up glue and cleaner at any hardware or home Improvement store.

If it is ABS then the proper thing to use is Teflon tape. That will help seal the connections better and help them from coming loosened. I believe it is the vibration from going down the road. I just check mine every once in a while and give the collar a little hand snugging.

Yep the connections on my old TT would work themselves loose just from travel even with teflon tape on them , just a good hand snug every trip or so.

My drain pipe under the kitchen sink was loose last year (it dripped into the Rubbermaid containers for leftovers that we conveniently keep there) and I assumed it was just the vibrations and bumps that caused it to work loose. I just check it every so often to make sure it's tight.

If you are talking about the p-trap pipe connection to the actual sink drain pipe you do not glue that. There is a flange that slides on the drain pipe in between the nut and p-trap that will seal upon tightening.

Unscrew the nut completely with a bucket underneath to catch the water. Apply two or three complete wraps of teflon tape on the threads and tighten it down. That should solve the drips.

If there is a leak further down the line in the drain where straight pipe and fittings with no threads are creating a connection then you need to use glue. I use the purple PVC primer and glue.
