Hot Water Out of Cold Faucet

Hi everyone, we have a problem and was hoping someone could help. Hot water is coming out of our cold water faucet. The water runs very hot for about 20 seconds and then turns cold. it is even running hot in the toilet when we flush. Does anyone know what the problem might be? The water is hot enough to hurt, if you left your hand under it. Thanks for all replays!

I would check the bypass valve at the water heater. Make sure it is closed and the other two valves are open.

If that's not it, verify that the outside shower valves are both closed.

Does it do it when you are hooked to city water and when you pump from your fresh water tank? Probably way to simple and you may already be aware, but if it is doing only when connected to water hook-up, was wondering if the hose was in the sun and getting hot. I have had it happen before.

Yes, it happens with city water hookups and with water from the tanks. The water seems to be coming from the water heater. We will check the bypass valve first thing in the morning. Thanks, we hope that is all it is.

How do you know the toilet water is hot? Lol. Sorry, had to ask. With this great forum your problem will get resolved. Again check the hot water heater valves.

I was wondering the same thing. It has to be something with the winterizing valves.

It's been suggested previously to make sure the winterizing bypass is closed and the outside shower valves are both closed. Also, if your shower wand has a positive cut off, make sure that the shower valves themselves are both closed.

Also, some water heaters have a mixing valve. The idea is that the water is heated to a higher than normal temperature (which effectively gives you more hot water); when there is demand for hot water, the valve mixes some cold water into the hot water supplied to make the temperature safe. If that valve is messed up, you could get water temperatures that are odd.

Question

Well, we checked all the valves and they are all done correctly. Any other ideas before we assume it is something wrong with the mixer valve?

Wow! I just discovered the same problem but it's only our toilet water... I ran it for a bit when sanitizing it and steam was coming out! (It's Colorado and chilly at night) Steaming toilet... I'm sure you guys will have fun with this! I just assumed the toilet was accidentally hooked up to the hot water supply -
Any ideas my friends of the Jayco Forum?

Is it possible to have an air pocket and pressure build up in the hot water tank? Can that pressure push hot water into the cold lines?
I experienced this too on our last trip out but didn't really investigate it further.

I will have to keep an eye on this during our next outing to see if it happens often. I only noticed it once before from the bathtub faucet.

You can see the steam rising when you flush....

It is possible that you have a cold water line running right next to the hot water line and the hot water is warming it up in that section of pipe.
