Hot Water Tank

Just wondered what everyone does with their hot water tanks. do they leave them on all the time or just put them on demand?

I was going to leave mine on all the time but thought it would be a waste as it seems to heat up fairly fast. Apart from the water always being hot, are there any other benefits from leaving it on all the time?

Re: Hot Water Tank

We leave ours on all of the time. Not sure about benefits except that we always have hot water when we want it.

I leave ours on all the time. It doesn't seem to turn on very often at all unless being used.

Guess I will be the odd man out here. I only turn it on as needed. I find that the water stays hot enough for hand washing all day and only need to turn on the heater for showers or doing dishes... and the dishwasher I installed is the BEST OPTION ever.

We try to run our HWT on electric as much as possible so it's only heating water when we're camped. However, even if running on gas, we shut 'er down when traveling. It only takes about 45 minutes (or less depending on how warm the tank still is when you restart it) before it's hot again.

One thing we do try to practice, though, is to shut off the water at the hookup (or turn off the electricity to the water pump if we're running off the fresh water tank) and turn off the HWT whenever we are going to be away from the campground- a lesson learned from our pop-up days when we left for the afternoon and sometime while we were away, the check valve failed on the fresh water tank allowing city water to backup into the tank causing it to overflow. We returned to find a river of water flowing from out of the filler and down the side of the trailer. Some of the water got inside the trailer. completely drenching the floor to the point that was flowing from the entrance door. It was a real mess as anything that was on the floor got wet too.
