Hot water tank explosion and breaker help needed
Hello,
When we were filling our trailer in preperation for our weekend get away we realized that water was on the floor. Close inspection shows that the top of the hot water tank has openned or exploded. Its an oval opening in the top of the metal. Needless to say, there was quite a bit of water and my husband is worried about an electrical fire. He has tried to turn off the breaker to the hot water tank and cannot locate it. There isn't a switch on the front like it shows in our manual. We have a 2012 Jayco 28 BHS.
Any ideas how this could happen and more importantly...how do we turn off the breaker to the hot water tank? He has now bypassed the hot water tank, so no more water is entering it. He has tried all the breakers but when he checks the control panel, the light still comes on when we flip the switch. Is the light on the switch separate and doesn't mean that the breaker is off? If not, where is the breaker to the hot water heater?
Christine

I have many years experience building and operating boilers (water heaters). What it sounds like is that your electric element may have
been inadvertently turned on shortly prior to filling the water heater. Once the water reaches the heated element, you have what is called a flash steam event, which spikes the internal pressure to well over 500 psi. The built in safety valve cannot react quickly enough to vent this much pressure and the result is a ruptured vessel. In technical terms, you had a BLEVE. I do not know where your breaker for the water heater is located, maybe someone else on here can help you. I would take the tt back to the dealer and hope that it's covered under warranty. Good luck.

There is a breaker in the converter for the water heater. The red light you get is from the 12V gas system for the water heater. There is a fuse in the converter for the water heater. Remove the fuse and turn off the breaker and you are good to go.
The breaker and the fuse should both be labeled in the converter panel door.

Even after we pull that fuse, the light still shows up on the control panel. We have two switches...one for gas heater and one for electric. I'm assuming its just the light in the panel and that the power isn't going to the water heater since the breaker was turned off???

If the breaker is off and the fuse is removed the water heater CAN'T heat. You can verify this by turning it on and checking the gas does not light.

There also should be a switch on the water heater to turn off the electric power.
Its a safety precaution so you don't blow up your HW heater.

I have a 2011 29D Melbourne. I've never seen a switch by the water heater. Were might that be?

Tom,
The switch is in your command center, below your tank level indicators.

Wow, I'm always learning something on here. I never knew there was another switch on the outside of the hot water heater. I don't recall seeing it but I'm going out now to check for it. Maybe they all don't have that switch.
