Hot Water Tank Issue

Hello,

I seem to have an issue with the hot water tank.
it appears that the tank does not stop heating up and then the blow off valve lets go of a bunch of water/steam!
I was looking for any suggestions on what would be the issue and if it is difficult to do something myself?

Could be a few things;

Loss of air pocket at the top of the tank -- re-establish one by draining and refilling the tank.

Weak pressure relief valve-- replace from most box stores.

Faulty thermostat. Causing the water to become too hot. Do you have any way of testing the water temp? An Infrared thermometer maybe?
