How many use portable tank

Looking at staying at a great looking camp in Winter Harbor,me. No sewer at site. Wondering how many of you go to parks like this? Are you using a portable black water tank to empty your tank and take it to the dump station?

Seems like hooking up trailer and going to empty is a pain in the butt.

I have the large thetford black water tank. While there is things I do like about it, there is quite a few I don't. Overall, it's the best bang for your buck in my opinion. Note, I bought it from Amazon cheaper then anywhere else. And had free shipping since prime member.

Do you recall which model you bought? Do you hook it up to a vehicle to pull it to the dump station?

I use the Tote-N-Stor, has larger tires, storage for hose and coupler, and bracket for towing to dump station. Easy to use, hook up hose while flat then lift handle end to dump. Its available on Amazon.

I have a 15 gallon that I carry. Used it for years but never put blank water in it. We can go a week without dumping the black tank.

It hooks to the truck hitch. Looks kinda funny pulling it with a F350.

After watching some poor guy in the campground have the cap come loose - I made a promise to my-self to break camp and drive to the dump station nearby when the Black tank is almost full..

And since most of our camping is "primitive" there is no place to haul it anyways.

Ideas on how to deal with the Grey water can be found on the Good Sam site: The gray water dilemma - Good Sam Camping Blog

We went to Yellowstone a few years back, and planned to stay 5 days in the back country camp grounds. Talk with the park months before we left, about how and where to dump our tanks. They said collect it and dump it down the latrine. We figured a 10 gallon tote we could pick up and put on the toilet and pour. I could not imagine doing that with a 30+ gallon tote.

Got a Thetford 27 gallon tote. Works great. Normally just use it for grey water but if we stay more than 7 days I just put about 5 gallons of the black water in with the grey water and then dump. Have not had any problems. It does look funny pulling the tank with a Ford Excursion tho.

I've a 25gal thetford. I always pack it IF there's 2 perameters.
1. A campsite w power/water but no sewer--(dump nearby)
2. And/or we have extra guests staying w us(damn they use water a LOT)
I'd NEVER want to hook up- take TT to dump station then back-yuk

Every trip always requires add-one/subtractions packing wise.

I never fill it full. 25gals is heavy. Finally figured out how to hitch it to back of truck- very counterintuitive but works when you figure it out

If you do get a "blue boy" make sure it is larger than your largest waste tank. You don't want any nasty surprises when filling it..

I saw one guy had his portable tank in the back of his truck bed and used one of those portable 12VDC FLOJET 18555-000 Waste Water Pump Kit with a long 3/4-inch water hose

Google Image

He had this hooked up to his waste valve and pumped it up into the tote in the back of his truck bed. Then he unhooked the 3/4-inch hose from the trailer and tied it off high on his truck bed and drove to the dump location to gravity drain his tote. The TOTE never left the back of the truck bed...

He also said to be sure to have the portable tote larger than the waste tank to prevent over filling of it - said that was quite a mess to clean up hehe...

I watched him to do this and looked like a neat hands off way to empty your tank...

What I do as well when we camp with my brother in law at his cottage. He has a 50 amp hookup for me to use as well as a near by water spigot, but his septic tank is rather small and the nearest dump station is at a campground about 8 miles away.

So to make it as easy as possible to dump my tanks, I use my 42 gal. Barker tote as well as two 25' 3/4" clear plastic tubing hoses I fashioned up with shutoff valves at each end instead of just using a standard garden hose. I not only want to be able to see when I am passing clear/gray water before I disconnect but I can ensure a clean disconnect of the hose for transport to the dump site or ensure no leakage/dripping when the hose goes into storage.

Once at the dump station, I use a standard sewer hose with a clear elbow to empty it if possible or reattach the 3/4" hose to dump into a toilet/cleanout.

Works really well.

I own a flo-jet and let me just say it's worth every penny! Not only you can use it at campgrounds that don't have sewer hookup, but like me I use it to empty my black tank through the flo-jet and let it drain to the sewer washout when I'm home. Very easy and convenient to use.

We purchased a 22 gallon blue tank at the beginning of this year. We have used it a few times but only for gray Water and obviously at sites that have water but no sewer. Worked great and gave us piece of mind to use the shower as much as we wanted. We generally use the toilets at the campgrounds we stay at so the black tank doesn't get very full at all. Very easy to hook up to the storage tank and fill. Tow it very slowly to the dump station and you're done. First time we camped in this trailer the gray tank was filling up over night. Come to find out that when we pushed the sink for the outside kitchen in to stow it the faucet handles were hitting the top of the storage area and turning them on slightly. Got that taken care of fast!
