how strong is the roof on an old Jayco trailer?
Hi everyone. I want to install a ladder at the back of my 1983 16' (including tongue) trailer, in order to service the evaporative cooler which is up near the front of the roof. Does anyone know if the roof is strong enough for the weight of a smallish adult? Thanks for any help!

I would not take a chance on walking on the roof of a rig that old. AC maint. is not something that would require access over a few time a year if that. I would consider a step ladder with padding against the side and a piece of plywood to distribute the weight.

We don't have a dedicated sub-forum for older RV's, but folks have started their own threads on old RV's in the individual sub-forums (PUPS, HTT's, TT's, etc.).
I'm surprised that no one has started an "OLD RV" group in the JOF "Social Groups" forums yet (located under "Community" top of page.

If you are going to get up on the roof, use some long planks to distribute your weight across roof truss's.

If it doesn't have a ladder already installed it won't have any suitable backing to mount a ladder to. I don't think it's a good idea to install one. You would be better off to just carry a small extension ladder. You can probably save a lot of money if you check out a big box store or a camper dealer.

Define old... Our 97 is brand new to me. A buddy of mine has an 86 and it is still instyle imo. I don't think Jayco's age...

Good point! Style-wise, she's perfect. Mechanically maybe a tiny bit fragile, like all of us at a certain age.

Besides servicing the AC, you might want to clean the roof and check for loose caulking around vents and antennas. I carry a short aluminum ladder that gets my eyes about even with the roof and can use a brush on a stick to sweep or scrub.
To get on the roof, I usually park our F 150 close alongside and climb up from the roof of the truck. With my back to the TT, I push up with my hands and sit on the roof edge of the TT. If you scoot around of hands feet and butt, your weight will be distributed fairly well. That said, I can walk on my roof and it seems fairly solid. Soft -rubber soled shoes are best.
