Jackknife sofa for fat people
Let's face it we all pack a little too much into our travel trailers and we have a little too much in the trunk, if you know what I mean.
The jackknife sofa in my new Jayco Jayflight 264BHW felt a little soft so I beefed up the frame and now it feels solid. I used 2 pieces of one and a quarter inch angle iron from home depot and strapped them onto the frame. I could have went to the trouble to weld on the angle iron or drill and screw the angle iron onto the frame but I thought these pipe clamps would work just fine and it's a lot faster. We will see how they hold up over time.
I used a 6' piece of angle iron cut to size, and a 4' piece of angle iron I could use two 6' pieces but I was cheap and I think the 4' will be plenty for the front end of the jackknife sofa. As you can see from the photos I just used 4 pipe clamps on each angle iron and then use some gorilla tape to cover them so they won't rip through any fabric or foam or anything. Now the couch seems really solid and doesn't feel like it's bowing in the middle when I sit down on it.
Jayco kindly made this easy to do its a couple of nuts that can be removed with a 1/2 inch deep well socket on the bottom. The base will easily slip out and then you could unzip the cover and the frame just slides right out of the bottom of the cover. Clamp your angle irons on there and you can slide it right back in zip it up, and bolt it back on, its that easy. I didn't do anything to the back of the couch as that's not where my fat butt is sitting. Hope this helps.
