Jacks up/down when storing

We have put the trailer for the winter. We followed everything in the manual and even pitched it a little for water run-off. My question is it better to store the trailer with the stabilizer jacks up or down? I have looked around and seen trailers stored both ways and heard varying reasons for doing it either way. My thought is to leave the jacks up as I have it in a protected area that gets little snow. Thoughts?

I leave mine up, just haven't run across an advantage for them to be down while in storage. In Michigan the ground surface does all sorts of strange things with the freezing temps, ice, snow, etc., and keeping the 4-stabs up is one less thing to worry about.

Also, having them down is 4 additional points of entry for the mice .

I usually leave mine up because of the mouse entry point at RE said...however this year they are still down from when I unloaded from a late trip (the rocking makes my wife sea sick)....I really don't think it matters either way in the big scheme of things since it is only a few months.

Tafische,

Thanks for the reply. Our cold months last from Oct to about Mar with temps in single digits or below zero, strong winds and the snow can vary from a dusting to the next day getting a ft or more. Luckily, the cold drives the mice away plus we have a cat that loves to remove any rodent. She is great at it. I will put them down if anyone besides me wants to go into the trailer and for sure if the slide is extended.

Leave 'em up, but only b/c I never had a good reason to put them down. The mice thought is a good one as well...

One of the problems we have during our Michigan winters is the ground frost build-up causes the ground to heave up-ward, even cracking and lifting concrete. Hate to have that happen under one (or more) of my stabs .

Before we started living in our trailer all winter I would always put the jacks down and set the trailer level. That way when/if the power went out we could just hook up the generator and move into the camper. We could use the refrigerator, tv, furnace, and stove. We heat the house with wood so it would stay warm.

Clutch,

Good idea but luckily we, knocking on wood, we have constant power during the winter. If we do loose power, guess I will have to hurry to get trailer set up while wife stays warm in the truck. Also where we keep the trailer, next to the house, is level front/back and side/side, so it is just a matter of putting jacks down, opening slide and it is ready for us.

I sneak out sometimes and hide in there where the kids/wife can't find me and take a nap -- does that count too?

I would do that but I think that is where the wife goes to hide from me.

We leave ours down just because it looks better to us all leveled up. We scatter moth balls under ours to ward off any unwanted rodents, insects, etc…
