Smile Jay Feather X17Z Solar plug

I can't find in the manual anything specific about the solar connectors on my new Jay Feather. There are connectors on the roof and on the frame near the battery. Someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong. I'm assuming that the plugs on the roof go to the inside solar control panel (which I don't have yet) and onto the battery from there and the plug on the frame goes directly to the battery and is UNREGULATED. Am I right? The frame plug states a maximum amp input to it. I need to know if any solar panels (portable) that I attach to the frame connector need to be on a controller to keep from boiling the battery. I'm again assuming that they do because I can't believe there is one between that plug and the battery. Any confirmation oneway or the other would be appreciated!

I don’t believe there’s such a thing as too much solar power to your batteries. Your batteries will stop charging when voltage reaches 13.8 volts.

I’m wrong—a controller is required ...unless it’s a small trickle charger I think.
