Angry Jayco 212 QB bed fixed

The bed box in this TT was literally falling apart, so I took out the flimsy plywood, closed off the pass thru and added support. replaced plywood with 1/2" and change to a center hinge. No need for struts now. took the side panels off and reattached to the top of new plywood.
I would attach pics of I could figure out how.

I hear you about the bed. We have a TT Jayco Jayflight Baja 25'. The bed is a poor excuse for a place to sleep. Thin, easily cracked plywood....without us even doing anything but sleeping on it, lol. Hubster reinforced it underneath. We added a mattress topper. Way better but could still use improvement.

It's and easy fix. A couple of days of work and about $100. of material. I would post pics but when I try I'm asked for the URL?

Welcome to the Jayco bed reinforcement club! Most of us are members in good standing.

To attach photos, click the “Go Advanced” button; then scroll down and select the “Manage Attachments” button. From there, attach each photo (Choose File buttons). To avoid vertical photos posting sideways, do a crop — even a very light one — to it before you attach it. Good luck!

Does the center hinge impact the ability to get the bed up since the mattress would pivot at the top end?

No, it's actually easier then before with the struts, since you're only lifting half, and we have a 10" mattress. I going to add a fold down leg.

I don't understand why Jayco made the bed this way. Having access to the pass-thru storage from inside is pretty useless. You'd have to climb into the storage area to reach the front. It can't be cost since the gas struts must have cost more than a bit of plywood to seal off the pass-thru. It seems that just about everyone ends up reinforcing the bed somehow. Anyone out there find this access useful?

I think it was just a way for Jayco to save a couple of bucks on material. The side panels that hide some of the pass thru are just hanging out in the air with no support underneath. I think most of the bed area was just to cover up the cheapness.

We actually found it very useful. When we use our trailer to travel it is also a tent camping trip. We leave the trailer at a safe location and take ten days off in the woods with a tent. The shakedown day is the day before. It never fails to be pouring and being able to get to all in the basement and do our pre trip checks without getting gear and us soaked before the trip is quite handy.
I think it all depends on what you want to do with your TT.

That and shave a pound or two everywhere possible. I probably added 10 pounds reinforcing the bed, overhead shelves, pantry shelves etc. No big deal and now it’s usable.

With the thicker ply wood and extra reinforcement I'm sure at least 20 or 30 lbs. Still no big deal.

Like a lot of people here, I am a member of the bed reinforced club. I did not block off the front pass through like a lot of people have. Yes I have found the open area very useful. One of our totes is about 3 inches too long if the under bed wasn’t open to the pass through. It’s also easier to reach items in the center of the pass through. To each his own. Jay.

We only blocked it off because my DW had a preference to keep "Outside" stuff outside and "Inside" stuff inside...

I blocked it off and insulated it to keep a little more cold air out. Especially under the bed.

I havdn't felt the need to reinforce the bed but we did go with a residential queen and now I need to extend the plywood. Which will result in the same thing. I also want to add a cabinet door so we can access easier from the inside without lifting the bed. I may just go ahead and reinforce while I'm at it. I think I will go ahead and rip the 2x4s in half like the factory to cut down a little on the weight.

My outdoor cooking and stuff extends into the space that would then be "inside". That may be a pain unless the new lifting is easier.

We have. On our summer trips we tend to have a couple extra totes for extra clothes and miscellaneous which we wouldn't want to have to go outside to access. In general dividing storage areas will always reduce your options and cause you to lose useful space.
