Jayco 27RL and 2014 F150 EcoBoost MAX TOW

I have a 2014 F150 EcoBoost Super Crew with Max Tow package (11,100 lb trailer rating). I use a 10,000 pound Equal-I-Zer hitch on my setup with a 264BHW (4,800 lb dry, 6,500 GVWR).
I am looking at the 27RL (5,755 lb dry, 7,000 lb GVWR) and wondering if anyone out there thinks this would be an adequate tow vehicle. I am also adding a Roadmaster Active Suspension, whether I keep my current trailer or get the 27RL.

I know....dead horse...but I appreciate the feedback! It really helped in my evaluation for my first trailer!

There are a few active members here with the 27RL that may be able to comment on their actual tongue weight. I would assume however that you will probably fall in that 900# +/- range depending on loading. It will be a non-issue for your F150 as long as you have the available payload.

Payload is just over 1700 lbs.

You will be fine! I pull a larger WH with less available payload. My tongue weight on a loaded trailer was 850lbs. I found most WHs,JayFeathers and Jayflights we sell are about 100lb heavier on their listed dry tongue weight.

Spec guide has your 27RL at 650lbs. 750lbs should be close to your tongue weight. In fact I just checked this on an actual trailer we sold last week. Salesman had put in for a 600-800lb husky. After measuring the tongue weight we put on a 800-1000. Weights we check on our scale are before the customer loads them.

I see you're in St. Paul. I got my last one at Hilltop. This would be from there as well.

Two years ago we pulled a 27DSRL (7500 GVWR) with an F150, 3.5L ecoboost. Our tongue weight was 950 to 1000 lbs depending on how we loaded it. The truck, with LT tires did just fine.

Thank you! Always nice to find peace of mind. It's not a huge difference between what I have and the 27RL, but enough to check opinions a little closer.

My 2018 3.5L EcoBoost SCrew does fine with our WhiteHawk 26RK (6586lb dry, 7750 GVWR). The only downside, as everyone always points out, is that the turbo engines suck down fuel...8mpg with a strong headwind, 10-11mpg with mild winds, and 12mpg on the best day ever with my trailer.

My trailer is 4" shorter, but 3" taller (at least inside height), and at least 800lbs heavier...so should be a pretty close comparison.

I was born in MN. My dealer is much farther South! I like to remain anonymous though as I share info from Jayco.

I average 8mpg with my RAM. No turbo lol. I think no matter what you have, your going to suck down fuel while towing 8,000lbs.

Thanks, V!
Yeah, the mileage isn't great towing, but like I tell people: If you're worried too much about mileage you might not want an rv

I have a 2015 F-150 3.5 eco boost and I am towing a 2019 Whitehawk 28 RL. So far, no problems. We average between 8 and 9 mpg. Of course, I’m driving on mostly flat ground down here in Florida!

We used to tow a 2011 JAYCO Jayflight 33rlds with a Ford Excursion and my truck would get about 7-8 mpg. Now with the 27RL I am over 10mpg. When we bought the 27rl and towed it the first time and got home the truck said thank you to me. The 3000 pounds makes a difference.

Yeah, that's what I say too but it's good to see what everyone else is getting and that it isn't too far off my experience!

Got 10.5mpg this weekend about 270mi round trip with mostly gusty side winds. Got like 8mpg in December going 600mi round trip with strong head winds both ways...bad luck there.

I just put Bilstein 5100's in the rear a couple weeks ago, seems to help a bit but nothing revolutionary. I am also considering adding airbags or roadmaster active suspension to get back some of the sag.

Please post about your experience with the Roadmaster setup when you get it installed and get to do some towing!

I will definitely post some info on my impressions of the Roadmaster Active Suspension. I have hear a LOT of good things about it from reviews other than the people making or selling them.

Have you tried hooking up your blue ox with adding one more link? That might bring your back end up a bit. I love seeing them blue ox bars with lots of load on them. They do a great job!

By adding a link I mean adding more load to bars.

Same as above

I have the exact same setup have zero issues just did a 2800 mile pull thru Colorado with ease. The Ecoboost is a beast not saying it's perfect but it's very adaquate. We have logged many more miles on short 2-3 hour trips average 10-12 mpg flat lands 7-9 in the mountains. The beauty is when not towing I average 21+mpg regularly. Also there are special tunes for EB engines that can change how you drive forever. lol Do your maintenance and you want miss a beat.

Yeah, I've tried 9, 10, and 11 links.

9 is easy, 10 is kinda hard to get the link in the saddle and cam over unless you really push the rear end up hard with the jack (near stall out). 11 is he-man level with an 18" breaker bar.

And when I say He-man...I'm a big guy, worked in a heavy equipment shop up until last year, regularly swing an 8-10lb sledge hammer, rarely deal with bolts that require less than a 1" wrench.

I find if i wedge my knee under the bar and give it a couple inches of pre-bend (and half an inch of painful dig into my knee) I can get it hooked in the saddle with 10-11 links.

The bad part is getting it released after putting it at 10-11 links from the end. 9 is fine, but 10 or 11 kinda yanks me around when I release it.

I had the F150 3.5 Ecoboost

I also had the F150 3.5 echo boost from 2016. I pulled two different rentals similar to the size you are referring too. I think the experiment was fine and the trucks in general can be loaded above the specs and do fine. I still had to upgrade because I got a 5th wheel and I have to say the F350 is a beast compared to the F150 but at a steep price of course.

My only concern was liability. I'm not sure what the risks are if you are above the official limits and anything happens. I always hate to open the door to any insurance company that could use this to deny coverage.

Anyone know the risks involved?
