Jayco 287bhsw Tongue weight

Hello everyone,

I am looking at purchasing a 2021 Jayco 287Bhsw

"Dry weight- 6095 lbs
Gvw - 8150 lbs
Dry hitch weight - 890 lbs"

Those are from jaycos website,

The yellow sticker on a similar unit( exact same model w/ same addons) is 6391 lbs(w/ propane)

7400 lbs(rough guess at load) at 13% = 962 lbs
@ 15% = 1110 lbs

I am looking at the Blue Ox Swaypro, and I am wondering if I should go with the 1500 lbs bars or the 1000 lbs bars?

I would go with the 1500lb bars. While you may endeavor to limit your loading it has a way of creeping up on you and the 1500lb bars would cover it when you end up being heavier than expected. I've been running the 1500lb bars for a couple years on the ORV with about ~1200-1300 tongue and 10 links on the chains which can be a bear at times to release. I'm considering moving to the 2000lb bars and dropping back to 9 links.

I have a 2017 287 BHSW. I used a tongue scale and found that we are at 930lbs loaded up including 2 batteries and plenty stored under the bed. I have a 10,000 lb equalizer hitch and was maxing it out based on their website once I added in weight of items in the bed. I’m waiting to install the 12,000 hitch for this camping season. I’d go for the bigger hitch.

Shadow664,

Welcome to JOF

Worst case scenario 287BHSW loaded to GVWR 8,150lbs = 1,060lbs to 1,223lbs (13% to 15%) recommended Loaded Tongue Weight range.

A 1,500lb rated WDH would be ideal for the 287BHSW (1,200lb minimum rating). My 24RBS loaded tongue weight is 1,100lbs and I use 1,500lb rated spring bars, works great.

Like any WDH, proper sizing and adjustment optimizes TV handling of the TT.
