Jayco Trailer Jack Noise
Stayed at the Outer Banks during Thanksgiving. Elected to leave Monday instead of Sunday to stay out of traffic. A front came through and dumped a lot of rain, most of the night. Got up the next morning to hook up and the trailer jack made horrific noise. Got hooked up, home and unhooked. Jack still sounded rough. It is a FIC 3500, took out side plastic cover off and then put the trailer tongue on jack stand and took the cast aluminum cover off. Gear box full of water. Cleaned all the water out and wipe old grease out, and reassembled. Had some trailer bearing grease and repacked. Ran great and quiet. I put duct tape over the aluminum housing hole and duct tape over the rubber plug that covers the hole where the manual crank is inserted. It is wide open for water to get in, the gear box does not have a seal to kept water out. Glad I looked at it soon because in a few days the gears would have rusted up and I would be purchasing a new jack.

Glad you pulled it apart and looked at. Good chance a lot of it is condensation.

They make covers for tongue jacks, DW made ours. I've also seen people using 5 gal buckets at the campground although I wouldn't suggest driving with it on.

X2 about not driving with a 5gallon bucket covering the jack. I did that with my first camper, no problem. On our Jayco, every time we hit a bump it lowered the jack a little. I ground off the whole extension before I noticed the noise and pulled over. Caught it just. In time! Jay

I use the Jayco branded spare tire cover over the jack with a bungie cord about mid way down since I moved the spare underneath. It stays on all the time and has stayed dry for years now.

I know this sounds goofy but it works.
During very heavy rains, I use an old rubber muck boot (size 11) for the power jack. It fits very snug over the jack and will not come off when traveling.
Plus the curious looks from other motorists is a bonus.

It may SOUND goofy, but what a neat way to repurpose boots. Mine are size 12, so I'll have to see if the "shoe fits"! Now I know how to recognize you at the campground.

Since we are on the subject. My jack is loud, I always thought it was the motor, so are these things supposed to be quiet?

As a cheap alterative, I used a Golf Shoe Bag from WalMart or your choice.
I think it was about $10.00. Some people use a 5 gallon bucket to cover the jack.

When we had our Rockwood, I covered the tongue jack with a 5 gallon bucket. We would travel like that too. When we got our 24RBS I did the same thing without thinking. But the up and down button is in a different place. As I went down the road, every bump I hit dropped the foot down a little. By the time I pulled over to try and find out what the noise was, I had ground down the jack extension! Use a bucket if you want but don’t tow with it! Jay

It should have roughly about the same noise as an electric drill. There'll be sound from the motor and all the gears inside.
