Jayflight SLX Brake Question

Hi all, this may be a stupid question but should the brake wires be connected on each side of my trailer or does it run through the axel or something? I was playing around underneath this morning and noticed on the right side of my trailer each wheel had two wires behind them that aren’t hooked up to anything. On the other side those wires were hooked up. I have attached photos below and any info would be appreciated! Trailer brakes are a new thing to me!

Yes and Yes!

I had problems with the brakes on my fifth wheel when I first brought it home, they barely worked! I reset them up but it still wasn’t adequate IMO. Upon further inspection The previous owner had fooled with the electrical connectors and when he replaced them he did not use waterproof connectors. Both ends of the wires that run through the axle were full of corrosion as were the connectors themselves. The point the wires enter and exit the axle can be areas of concern.

I took a quarter inch off of each wire at a time until I got to solid non-corroded wire, I did not use the wires that ran through the axle, I ran new 12 gauge wire over the top of the axle with wire loom and then zip tied that in place. I posted a link below to the electrical collectors are used, when you push the wires into them and screw them on it pops a small pocket of sealant that makes the connector waterproof. If you take them off do not reuse them use a new one each time.

If you don’t have self adjusting brakes you should adjust them every year. If you replace them spend the extra money and upgrade to self adjusting. Below is a video that describes the process.

Make sure the brakes are actually working. We had the same scenario. The flexing of the axle had pinched the brake lines and we had no brakes.. What happened is our Sway Command and brake controller told us that the trailer brakes werent working.. A crawl underneath revealed broken lines.

Electric brake connections always have to be clean (not corroded). Use some die-electric grease or copper grease on the connections.
Once a year check your trailer brakes with the wheels of the ground and with the disconnect switch, this to isolate if one brake set isn't working.

It’s a 2020. Only used 5 times so far so I was wasn’t sure if it wasn’t done properly at the factory

I finally looked at mine.
All four backing plates have wires going into the top.

Did you look at the top of the backing plates?
The wires in your pic are spliced but they must be going into the top of the backing plates.

Also your backing plates are missing the adjustment slot covers.
