Little propane grill bottles

I know this sounds minute, but where do I dispose the little propane tanks I use on my grill once they are empty? I am sure I just don't toss them in the trash.

Why not? That's where we always put them.

Honestly - I just throw them in the trash if they are empty. They are not listed as recyclable at least for my area. Seems a waste, but unless I had a bunch of them, I am not sure anyone would take them.

Now - I know this may be some conversation going - but I also refill mine with some caveats. After you refill them technically it is illegal to transport them. Also - I dont refill and store, sometimes the valve leaks after refilling - so I attach to the appliance and use right away. I also generally refill one four or five times then toss it and I never refill if it is dented or has any other signs of wear. With the price of these little guys now, it is just hard not to refill....

Why bother with refilling the little things? Why not get an adapter hose and use a 5 lb bottle? Lasts longer, safer, and legally refillable.

Yeah - I have the adapter hoses, but many times using several lanterns and stoves, it is much easier to use the small cylinder. This is mainly when camping with the scouts.

A lot of camp sites have a separate recycling bin for those tanks.

I wouldn't be trashing them, even though they are "empty", they still have a bit of propane in them in a gas state.

Our fire department collects these (and other bad stuff).

I think it probably depends on your area of the country. I have never seen a campsite recycle for propane bottles - in fact, I just saw my first sort of recycle center at a campsite - although they only took cans.

I work for the local fire dept and we dont take any kind of hazards, too much liability I assume. We had a lady last year bring up a suspicious substance to our main station and it ended up causing a major hazmat incident which could of potentially impacted our city hall, 911 dispatch center, police and fire. Luckily it turned out being nothing, but these day unfortunately you never know what might show up.

I am no tree hugger, but I absolutely believe things like this should be recycled. Unfortunately when you are provided no option - there is little you can do other than toss them....

I know people are going to have a cow, but I drain mine down completely , drill a small (1/8") hole near the domed end, then cut them in half with a bandsaw. The resulting cups from the bottom end are the best thing for using in and around the shop for cleaning small parts, holding fasteners, applying polyureathane finishes, and on and on.

As mentioned there maybe a place to take them, i would talk to a place that sells them or fills full bottles to know where they dispose of them.. Canada is big into recycling so we have resouces but i do know that it probably isn't good to put them in the regular trash, they could proably give off a little pop if heated or compressed. Not a fair fight to the garbage man.
